Hi all -
I have run the app. comp. wizard for my son's games, and
I set the 256 colors and 640x480. When I run the game,
however, it only changes to 256 colors. It does not
change to 640x480. I can go in manually into the advanced
properties of display settings and change it manually,
but my son - well he cannot (being 6 and all). Please
help - practically all his games need this setting!

Thanks,
Erpara

Hi Erpara,

Perhaps if you place a shortcut to the game on
your son's desktop, and change the properties
of it under compatibility it will be more effective
than using the wizard. Hope this helps! :-)

I am the only non-default account on the machine - set as
administrator. Any other ideas?

I already did that, though, and still the same result.
Any more ideas?

Hi erpara,

Try setting another game such as Freecell to that resolution
just to make sure that it's neither your video drivers, nor any
other component of windows that's at fault. If it works, then
check for ingame settings that may allow you to set the game
at that resolution. If there is no such setting, contact the tech
support for that game, and ask them if there's a change you
can make to the game's .ini file, or a command line command.

Hope that helps! :-)

It does not change to 640x480.

What exactly is the resolution before you switch to the game,
and what resolution is appearing instead of the 640x480?

It is possible the games were for cga or interlaced mode,
but this info is just an fyi (for your information). Can you
tell the name/title/year of a few of the games so I can have
a look if any of them are in my archive...
I can go in manually into the advanced
properties of display settings and change it manually,

Have you set the monitor itself (size, resolution) when in
640x480 mode? Also allow mode changes without
restarting in the display properties.

Can you also give the video card make/model in case
it is some unsupported registry setting we can look into.
but my son - well he cannot (being 6 and all). Please

Heh, don't underestimate the will of a young lad,
let him see what you are doing...
maybe he just wants Dad to play too? '-))

That age (6) is not unusual for beginners in a fulltime classroom
environment to learn/study computer programming in some
European countries, so don't be surprised if he overtakes you
within a few years....kids learn/pickup much quicker than we do.

What exactly is the resolution before you switch to the
game,
and what resolution is appearing instead of the 640x480?

The resolution is 1024x768 and it does not change the
resolution at all. It is set to allow changes without
restart - and let me mention that I had xp installed
previously and these programs ran the way they were
supposed to so I'm not convinced it has anything to do
with the games.
Also, I can go in manually to the advanced properties and
set it to 640x480, 256 colors, 60 Hz - so I don't think
it's a video card issue.

UGH!
