Applet tag doesn't work at all in ie6 with sp2

So,

Applets work fine in Firefox after installing the JRE from Sun

but they just don't work at all in IE 6

things I tried ... made sure java scripting was enabled, removed
internet temporary files, made sure the java plugin applet in control
panel shows IE for the browser. .. All these things failed to get the
applet tag to function. Not sure why.
