Append query takes a long time

I have an append query that works just fine if a memo
field is short (under 100 characters), Anytime the query
is run and the memo field has 100 or more charaters the
query seems to hang or take way to long to execute. The
memo field format is needed in both tables. Any ideas on
why this would occur when the number of characters reaches
100 or more? Thanks

I think the memo field is actually stored differently than other fields.
