"Appear" only stays on my screen for a moment

How can I get animation to appear quickly on the screen, but then disappear
when I choose (on the timeline)?

I have several pictures on each slide. I've added audio and am attempting
to time the pix to appear along with the audio. I want the pix to appear
faster than they are. If I choose "Appear" they disappear after they are
presented. However, I'd like the pix to remain on the screen until I choose
for them to disappear. I've tried "Fade" which DOES allow me to choose when
they disappear, but it takes forever for them to be presented on the screen
(because of the amount of time I've requested they remain visible - the ones
that have shorter times presented on the screen will fade in faster, but the
pix I want to remain on the screen for let's say 10 seconds, it takes 10
seconds for them to fade in.)
Can you help?

You don't state your PPT version, so I'm doing v2003:

Select the picture

Slide Show > Custom Animation > Add Effect > Entrance > Appear
(Fill in the properties as you wish.)

With picture still selected ...

Add Effect > Exit > Disappear

Right-click the exit animation item in the task pane > Timing.

Set Start to With Previous (or whatever) and set Delay to how long
after the last animation (if any) the disappearance should be to match
music.

Also, with the right-click above, explore the Show Advanced Timeline
command for more "freehand" control using a timeline. (My favorite
method.)
