I was printing a document from my canon ip5200 - which has been working
fine since I got it over a month ago - and tried to do a second print out
upon which I received the message 'One of the USB devices attached to this
computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it.'

I later tried my USB flash drive 2.0 and got the same message, neither now
work although the flash drive had worked for months before. I have tried all
the suggested troubleshoot steps with no joy. What can I do?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It is amazing what a power off and a restart will do. Sometimes hardware
seems to lose it's mind. Removing the power from the computer will, at
times, sort things out. Try it.

I've tried restarts, system restores, uninstalling drivers and updating them
all to no avail. In fact I couldn't properly reinstall the printer because
when it can to configuring it the computer wouldn't recognise it! Also flash
drives don't need drivers per-say and shouldn't need updating surely? You
just plug them in and they work. At least my flash drives work on everyone
elses computer except mine.

I've tried the window inbuilt troubleshooter and that simply said it had no
idea what the problem was! Good trouble shooter.

What can I do? I notice other people seem to have had the same problem and
there does not seem to be a definative resolution to the problem. Or is
There?

Thanks, Any help appreciated

What I suggested also goes for printers. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
Sometimes the printers memory gets corrupted, just like can happen with a
PC. A shut down has cured many problems that occur with the various HP
printers I have had over the years.

Thanks again

I've switched the printer off and unplugged it several times and still no
joy.

Any other suggestions?

I'm running XP, sp2, all upto date with downloads and product updates.
Mother board is P4S800D if thats any help.

Find your printer installation CD. Then uninstall the printer using
add/remove programs - if an entry is there. If there is no entry there, go
to start/printers and faxes and uninstall/remove the printer from there.
Then - reboot. When the computer redetects the printer, cancel out of the
popup message. When the desktop has become stabilized, insert the printer
CD. The installation process should begin. Follow the instructions. Do not
do anything foolish, such as cleaning out your temp folders before the
installation has completed.

NOTE: If you have a multi-function printer, you may have to reboot two,
three or even four times as the system finds the new functions. When this
happens, "don't" cancel the popup window. Instead, allow the system to
search for the necessary software/drivers. The path to them will usually be
known, by now, to the system. If after each part of the installation you get
a reboot notice - DO SO!

Hope you might got the solution if not first try to check if your US
Pen drive is working for this you have to just plug this drive i
someone's else computer running windows XP and checkout if its workin
there or not if its working then there is something wrong with your US
Port and if the pen drive gives the same message on other computer the
the fault is with USP Drive this will give you concrete answer tha
your port or your drive which one is faulty.
then after that we can workout on your printer first confirm thi

Hello

The flash drive works perfectly on other machines. But fails to work in any
of the 6 usb ports on my computer. I have tried two flash drives in my
machine and neither work.

What I find strange is that I plugged my usb mouse into every usb port on
the machine and it works in all of them.

I have a usb mouse and internet connection which are working fine if that is
of any help?

Hello

I have uninstalled the printer completely, restarted and tried to reinstall.
It installs fine until the point that it asks for the printer to be connected
for alignment, at this point when the printer is switched on I get the usb
malfunction message as before so I can not continue with the installation.

Strangely though on the installation checklist says drivers are installed
but when looking at the driver manager it says that no drivers are installed
for this divice. When trying to update drivers from this point the hardware
update wizard says that the cd for the printer does not contain drivers for
this device.

Any clues?

As per your statement it seems that hardware part is ok as USB Mouse is
working on all ports and now it comes the software side most likely you
have to update your USB drivers 2.0 if still not working then you have
to try reinstalling windows this will definately works ( the last
solution for Microsoft Windows)

Are you suggesting that I format my computer? or can the drivers be updated
from the windows disc?

I hope I don't have to format, it seems a little exstreme - and I only did
one about three months ago. Is there an acknowledged fault on windows that
causes this problem?

My problem is that I have a HP Laserjet 4000 PC6 pinter and it is connected
by a USB 2.0. /parallel cable to my Medion Laptop computer every time I
disconnect the USB cable from the lap top and re-connect, the laptop picks up
the printer as a new item of hardware and reinstalls a new driver for the
printer on plug and play and labelling it as a new printer calling it Copy 2,
3, 4 etc. Any ideas I can get ound itby making each new printer the default
but its a pain as I have to re-adjust my settings every time

This is the "nature" of USB. Just make sure that you always reconnect it to
the same USB port.

For the original problem listed in this post....

I just had this problem and what fixed mine was to unplug the power supply from the wall and let it sit for approximately 30 min. Then i pluged it back in and started the computer. Then all my USB's were working just fine.

I found that the problem is caused (at least in my case) by having 2 sources of power feeding the same device and trying to charge it. (my MP3 player in this case) and i beleive the plug from the wall to the device was feeding back into the computer thru the USB connection.

Stopped pluging the player into the wall and computer at the same time and problem has never re-occured.

Hope this helped have a great day!

USB problem with Ipod and flash drive

I had a similar problem with my ipod and then my flash drive. Strangely other USB devices seemed to work OK. The only difference I coulld make out was that the problem seemed to apply to external drives. Anyway I talked to someone about it after spending hours trying to work it out and they said don't know, possibly a power problem but why don't you add another USB card. So I did that and problem solved, the USB sockets that were'nt working now do as well as the new sockets. So a £10 USB card or a spare one nicked from another PC might work. Worth a go.
