Apparent timeout of Interne connection

Windows 2000 Pro fully patched. BellSouth Fast Access DSL.

If I don't use the Internet shortly (15 mins? 30 mins?) after booting, I
can't connect. Generally, only a reboot will clear it.

I seem to remember that there is a feature in Windows that logs you off if
you don't connect after a period of time.

What could be causing this? I can't find anything in the Outlook Express 6,
Internet Explorer 6 or Windows Helps.

I'm trying here first before calling BellSouth.

Thanks in advance.

If you are mixing internal and external DNS entries into your client TCP/IP
DNS settings, it could cause this. If you are not, forget this post. :-)

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
before and after the issue may reveal something.

I next called BellSouth and I think they fixed it. They had me set my modem
to Always On instead of Manual. I haven't had any problems since, but it's
too early to be sure.

Well, that didn't fix it. So I did the next thing the BS tech had suggested:
I swapped USB cables. It's been solid for an hour now, so I think it may be
fixed.

Woof!

If you have the choice use a cat5 cable via a network interface rather than
USB.

It's still solid after overnight.

What's a cat5? What's wrong with USB?

BS want you to use an Ethernet cable, if possible, but it would only install
with USB.

Without any details it's impossible to know.
