App that lists MP3 tag info in a text format?

Is there an app out there that does the simple job of just extracting
tag info and playing it in text format? Ideally, the text could then
be sorted by the various columns, i.e., alphanumerically by title or
year or genre, whatever we need the order it at any given moment.
Yet, despite the sorting capabilities, still allow us to select all
the data to copy somewhere else?

TIA.

It's called an "ID3 tag editor"

Many if not most tag editors will export to CSV (comma separated values)
and/or other formats. A search for "export ID3 tag to CSV" at
http://www.google.com would be productive.

You're welcome.

Well, I found something close. As always, I don't just come here to
ask, I spend a lot of time looking via google. But since searches
always take a long, long time, I ask at the same time as often the
results are faster when the group comes back with a solution usu. well
before I find something suitable.

I did find something called MP3-finder v1.4. It almost does the
complete job. It's a very fast windows search-type of app that looks
for MP3 files quickly on your hdd. You can play any of the found
files or make playlists, all then and there. It supports dumping the
folder name into a box rather than having a darned folder tree one has
to click endlessly through (a BIG plus!).

The feature that helps with getting the titles in a text format is the
report where MP3 info can be exported to a text file. It requires
playing a bit to figure out the minimum boxes to check so that I get
the least amount of info yet still get the idv title tag, but then,
unfortunately, the resulting report requires extensive editing via
search-and-replacing to get rid of extra unwanted text. Can be a
bigger job than it should be.

It would be perfect if I could _just_ ask it to report on _one_ of the
id3 tags but it doesn't. The absolute minimum report it will make
includes the song title, the path and the size of file info, too, 3
extra fields of info which must be deleted from the report in order to
get just the ID3 titles needed.

So, still on the hunt, but this program is valuable and I've used it
to play/manage my MP3s on the hdd. I've not really taken advantage of
playing my music on my hdd as much. I've been more inclined to burn a
CD and play in a CD player. At least, until now.

It can be found here:
http://www.sitex.com.ua/en/products/si-Finder/mp3finder.htm

screenshots:
http://www.sitex.com.ua/en/products/si-Finder/mp3view.htm

It seems to be "freeware". It talks about being a "betta" (which I'm
assuming means beta, of course) and no nags so far of any kind, so I'm
thinking it is a beta for sure.

*******************************************
But, as I said, this one only comes close and I still need something
better otherwise all the editing is going to drive me crazy.

So, if anyone knows of any type of app that will make a text report
where minimum of _one_ of the tag fields can be isolated, pls advise.

In the meantime, this finder is good and is great for quickly finding
files to play or make playlists from or to edit tags of a found set of
MP3s, etc.

Cheers!

Hi fitwell,

Piggybacking here.

Now that you have found a batch file solution for your multiple
selection program launch query, I came across a neat little Windows tool
to do the same. Maybe you want to check it out.

It is only 15 KB, but it comes in a package of about 50 tools (870 KB).

ToolsPackage http://www.freewarehits.de/ToolsPackage.htm

The tools do not need installation nor do they write to the registry.

This one tool is called OpenGRP.

MP3Lister...no "help", you'll have to click around to learn to use it.

Sietse, that is a great little program. I can see myself using it for
launching any untold number of files/folders/URLs.

A brief overview, each "entry" in the program to be launched is
determined by the name of a text file. Every entry in that text file
is what the program will launch.

It doesn't work in the instance for launching several instances of
Agent, each day a different choice being needed, because:
- it doesn't stay on top, so in between every entry it launches, it
gets left behind the screen so you have to scramble to bring it
forward all the time to go to next item to launch when you need
individual files be available. Now, I can see if you're launching a
_group_ all at once that this isn't a problem.

Although, if it stayed on top always (without a 3rd party app to make
it do that) __OR__ allowed multiple selection, then it would work for
this, too.

One other concern, the interface has a very small window which doesn't
seem to allow resizing. Granted, a scroll appears, but you only have
the ability to see, up front, 6 entries. Another minor thing, but
something to keep in mind.

I'll stick with the excellent batch file for Agent instances being
launched; it works wonderfully well. But for regular app launching,
this little app is a gem.

Cheers!

The site has screenshots of the program exporting ID3 tags to a text
file, and *importing them from a text file*, which opens up some
interesting possibilities.

YES!! That is awesome. After going through the program, just a
couple of tips for others who use it for the first time and who try
exporting to a text file.

It has pretty standard file-loading. For ease of use for many people,
it not only has the standard cumbersome folder tree, but a box to dump
the pathnames. So you can click on the icons on the toolbar (either
the one with the "+" sign or the one with the "open folder" graphic)
to load files or click on FILE>ADD or FILE>FOLDER to load the
songs/folder.

Once files loaded, to export click on: TAGS>EXPORT (or just press
F9).

Choose the following on the export menu box that comes up to _just_
get a text file with the titles of the songs:

- on the STANDARD FORMAT tab of this menu box, put a target filename
with ".txt" extension
- de-select the "FIRST LINE HEADER" box just underneath the target
pathname.
- in the "File Type:" select "Text (Tab Delimited)" from the choices
available.
- click the "SELECT NONE" option to remove all the tag fields already
selected by default and then go in and choose what you want - in this
case just "TRACK TITLE" - in the large "Export Tags:" box.
- click "EXPORT" and then the file is created.

The file was perfect and needed absolutely no ediiting.

Thanks Mark!

You can use "Mp3 Tag Tools" http://sourceforge.net/projects/massid3lib
to export tags to CSV type list etc, it comes with a help file BTW heh
:)

Do you use this one?

When you open a directory, it seems to allow only one file at a time
to be selected. It also doesn't seem to support drag-'n-drop. How
does one get a bunch of files into the app all at once?

I'm guessing that MP3 Book Helper v2.3.2 might be the app to stay
with.

Thanks!

[snip]

Darn, I forgot why it was important so left it out, but must mention
after all: it is very important to make sure you're dealing with v2.3
ID3 tags. v1 tags truncate the names. So esp. if you have long song
titles, select v2.3's radio button on the main interface _before_
exporting.

I can recommend EZ-Playlist - a freeware general purpose plugin for
Winamp. Very little overhead, very fast scanning and will generate
(export) your list in text format with space, tab or CSV seperator.
Export just one or all tag info columns - pre-sort your list on any
tag field. Search and sort features and 'Explorer' views too !

No help file but all you need to know can be found on the author's
website. Don't be fooled by the name - this is far more than a paylist
generator.......and it's also a great tag management tool.

Yes i have used it, you can open any number of mp3s at a time you
want, the app opens folders and not files, just click open and it will
load that directory even if you select only 1 file, if you check the
recurse subdirectories checkbox in the open directory page, it will
open all the files in the subfolders of that folder too.

MACCC will do that (link in sig). MACCC is mainly for creating MP3 CD
covers, but I threw in an option to save the info as a plain text file
just because I thought someone might use it. It can do Artist,
Trackname, playtime, and size. Play around with it and feel free to
email me if you have problems or suggestions.

Ah, but can you choose your own delimiter? :)

Main reason I mentioned Lister was that fitwell was begging for something
that would let her make a list using just one tag field. Lister lets you
choose one or many of the 20 things it can export including a "custom"
field. Built in CSV, text, HTML and you set up your own HTML colors etc.
Plus, as I said before, you can make delimited files using any character you
want.

Help or not, it is a very good MP3 list maker. Smallish too, 600KB. Not
that there is anything wrong with Tag Tools - there isn't, it's included in
my dandies.

Hmmm, yes, I now see; I had only tried it out with 4 items per file.
On my system you even only have the ability to see, up front, 5 entries.

I now tried it out after having made a file with 12 entries, like in
your batch file. What strikes me then is:
Say, you want to (un)select items #11 and #12.
You scroll to the bottom, then (un)select #11.
The window gets redrawn after each (un)selection (!), so you then have
to again scroll to the bottom, to (un)select # 12.
That is annoying!

A work-around could be to split the one file with 12 entries into 3
files with 4 entries each.
When you want to execute selected items from 3 different groups, then:
You select the first group in the left pane and then, in the right pane,
select items within that group.
Then you hit the Open button to execute those items.
Then your other observation comes into play: you then must find and hit
the program's button on Windows Taskbar to bring the program's window to
the front again.
Then select the second group in the left pane, etc.

The only way to improve on this would be if, like me, you have e.g.
PowerPro always running, which lets me with a click of the mouse's
scroll-button on the program's caption toggle its window always on top.

Although in practice it really is not as bothersome as it looks like
when every step is written down like above, in comparison with your
batch file it is just too complicated (with >5 items per file).

That is a pity, as the tool is so small and so easily to 'configure'.
And I like it's features like:
+ Both Open and Open & Exit
+ Both Select All and Deselect All
+ Inverse Selection
+ Quit without doing anything <g>

If only the Items pane could contain as many items as one would like
(preferraby dynamically resized)!
That would solve the problem with >5 items and would make it a
competitor for your batch file.

dadiOH,
have you tried the latest version of Mp3 Tag Tools v1.2 Build 008? you
can export a custom list choosing only the fields you want. Yes it
uses tab as a delimiter, if importing into spreadsheets is the purpose
it doesn't matter if its a tab or comma its all imported the same, i
think a feature request to allow a custom delimiter is in order. ya it
doesn't do HTML as of now..
JJ.
