Apollo printer installation problem

I've an Apollo P-2100U Inkjet printer (Wish I hadn't). It's just over
a year old and has given problems intermittently (like causing Word
not to work)ever since I bought it. I stopped using it for about
three months after failing to get any help from either the vendor or
the manufacturer, and am now trying to get it going again.

It is deleted from my computer which is running WIndows 98. I've
started the installation process with the CD, which tells me that the
software is already on my computer and I must uninstall it before
reinsntalling it. Then it tells me it can't find the file to uninstall
on the computer. That is correct, because there is no Apollo file
anywhere on the machine. I've unplugged everything over and over
again, with the same result. Until I can delete the file that isn't
there, I can't reinstall the thing.

I've tried installing it on another computer running Windows XP, but
it won't install there, either.

Does anybody have any suggestions please, before I put the thing in
the driveway and run it over? It will be rather a shame, as it has two
brand new cartridges sitting in it.

Thanks for any help.

The Apollo 2100 is basically a rebadged HP 690 series. For XP, you are
probably limited to the stock drivers that come with XP. Otherwise, check
on HP's site for 690 series drivers.
