If it's like any other AOL, no way. They aren't going to miss out -forcing-
you to look at their ads and being sent to their home page etc.

Do you pay for your broadband connection to AOL? "AOL for Broadband" can be
used on any carrier, but most users won't touch it. If your carrier is BTI
for example (or Comcast, Verizon, Quest, Earthlink, SBC/Yahoo, or others),
you do not need to use AOL software. Generally, your internet experience
will be better if you can dump the AOL and connect directly to your ethernet
connection. The installer will set up the service for you, including an
ethernet card, if needed. (assuming you are using a desktop PC)
I see that AOL does offer broadband in some areas in partnership with other
providers. Go with the folks who provide the cable lines (BT or whoever).

If you want to use AOL software, you CAN by subscribing to what they call
"AOL Bring Your Own ISP" program, or BYOA (Bring Your Own Access).

If you have been using AOL previously, you will need to update your browser
at the Windows Update site. No problem, with broadband it is quick and
easy.

Your ISP (cable provider) probably has tutorial pages online showing how to
configure your Windows. Once configured, your PC will connect automatically
when you start Windows.

Oh joy - open to invasion instantaneously. With a version of IE
and all its ugly insecurities also. Almost as bad as using MSN.
AOL effectively committed suicide when they abandoned Netscape.
It is just going to take a while to stop twitching.

Yep there's a very simple solution to your problem: -

1) Take the AOHELL CD

2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.

3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch.

4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish

5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account.

6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.

7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.

8) Write - or type - 1000 times "I was an idiot to sign up to AOHELL"

There! Problem solved.

Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.

Once all that's done, you can connect without using AOHELL's trojanic
garbage.

LOL!

I've learned to -refuse- to support computer users that demand to use AOL. I
found that almost all the problems I had with machines started with the AOL
disk being put in the drive bay... There is no good reason to use AOL and
their propriatary interface.

Yep, trying to get all of AOL off a machine is like trying to get rid of
cancer. Why these people can't make their removal tool actually remove
their software is unexcusable. I guess they figure if you're removing their
software, screw you!

AOL used to be useful, when their freebies were mounted on a
floppy, which could be erased and reused. I am hard put to find a
valid use for their CDs. Maybe we can stack them up for use as
shims under the kitchen table legs?

I've heard of people hanging them in their fruit trees to scare off the
birds. I'm gonna try it this year.
