I have a Viewsonic G810 21" and if I go into bios, the high voltage shuts
down like the video card is not sending out the pulse and the monitor thinks
the comptuer is either in standby or shut off. I have a vivo 64Mb video card
and the monitor I named above.

I think it's my video card because my monitor did work on another PC in bios
mode for a while, this shuts down about 5 seconds after I enter bios. But
could it be a driver problem while I'm in bios??? I would think that the
drivers have nothign to do with the monitor during that stage of the
computer's boot up.

any ideas?

What if you go into the BIOS and when the monitor shuts down turn the
monitor off for 10-20 seconds then turn it back on.
How old is the monitor. Maybe the VGA card is sending out a signal that the
monitor interprets as stand-by/shutdown.
Nothing to do with OS drivers.

I've tried shutting it down for a few seconds, but not that long.

I can try that and let you know, but I don't think it will turn back on. As
far as the monitor, it's about 7yrs old and I got it from work because they
were switching to flat screen.

ahhhh good call. I tried shutting off the power and waiting a few min and
what do you know, the screen came up for about 3 seconds and then the high
voltage in the monitor shut down.

so the card is putting out the signal, my monitor must just be flakey which
stinks because it will be impossible to repair

Thanks again!

worth out of that monitor, then, Peter. Time to dust off the wallet! ;-)

I don't know a lot about VGA card signals, but maybe the VGA card is
changing to a different mode for the BIOS display and the signal is too weak
for the monitor you are using. I am assuming older monitors undersand
fewer/different signals
You need to turn off the monitor for 30 seconds or so to fully discharge all
of the power from the monitor.
