Anyone using W2K with a HyperThreading chip?

Googling around I find that either W2K works fine with the chips or
shouldn't be used with the chips. I can't find anything definitive,
though.

I'm currently getting the funds together to build my first box (time to
replace my aging Dell 450Mhz) and want to know if I should avoid the chips
or what?

I *am* going to go with an Intel chip so the AMD/bang/buck argument has
already been decided in my mind. I just need to which flavor of Intel to
choose.

Looking on Newegg the price difference between a 533Mhz FSB and an 800Mhz
FBS is only $5 dollars at the moment
<http://makeashorterlink.com/?F27311606> so I need to know if running W2K
on the 2.8C is going to give me more problems than the small price
difference is worth?

Thanks for any help.

You should be able to disable the Hyperthreading in the BIOS if it causes
problems..

From what I have read (I only use AMD at the moment) you can use HT on W2K
and it shows up as 2 CPUs. You should have HT enabled before you install
W2K to ensure the correct HAL is loaded.

Only problems I have heard of is if you have a dual HT system as W2K Pro
will only allow 2 CPUs and a dual HT system would make W2K think there were
4 CPUs so only the first 2 would show.

Howdy!

I've not tried a dual-Xeon HT capable machine yet, but supposedly
SP3 and above will treat a HyperThread CPU that's HyperThreading as one CPU
for license count.

SUPPOSEDLY.

So far, I've not felt any strong reason to verify this.

Then again, 2K Pro is a 4 CPU license anyway ...

It's XP Pro that's 2 CPUs only.
