Gurus,

Anyone seen a 2.5" 7200RPM SATA hard drive at a capacity greater than 200GB?
I bought one of these drives last year at this time and I can't believe a
year later such a beast can't be found. I'm not a very intuitive web
searcher, perhaps that's what limiting me.

offered today and probably wasn't even available a year ago.

Why would you doubt my statement. Maybe it was in May/June but it was
definitely last year.

Why don't you just look at the drive you bought, or lacking that look at
the receipt and determine what it is that you bought? Far simpler than
playing guessing games.

But if you insist on guessing, Seagate, Samsung and Hitachi (and probably
others by now) manufacture 200gB 2.5" 7200rpm drives. Take your pick.

I see that I've not taken into account your "greater than" in the subject
line. There are no 7200rpm drives of that size that I know of. Larger
drives (500gB?) are available but each that I've seen has been no faster
than 5400rpm.

I doubt it because they don't seem to have existed at all
until some point in the future.

Maybe you're thinking of 5400 RPM.

It exist now. And has existed for quite some time. This is the one I
bought.

As the con in the review article suggested states, the formatted drive
capacity is actually 186.4 GB; not 200GB as advertised. But it states 200
on the drive labeling and has been existing in my laptop since at least
May/June of last year.

I wish 5400RPM would give me the performance I need but it does not.

Larger drives (at 250-300GB?) are indeed available but no faster than
5400rpm as your research indicates. I wanted a second set of eyes on this.
I will have to balance waiting vs. just getting a 200GB 7200RPM one.

No you wrote "capacity GREATER than 200GB".

All drives have lower true (binary) GB capacity than their
label suggests. If you need 7200 RPM, 200GB is it and as
you saw Newegg is one place to pick between a few.
Pricewatch.com also has some.
