Anyone know why this table is broken?

Right click the table and choose table properties. Under Text wrapping -
Around is selected. Click None and click Ok to have your table go back to
the top.
Probably what happened is that the table move handle (the little plus sign
that appears to the upper left of the table corner) was dragged by
accident... turning the table into a floating table. If you have
occasionally used that as a short cut to select the table, you might want to
stay away from it. One teeny drag can convert your table and you already
know what a pain that is! (You said it was constantly happening to your
tables...)
Good luck with the other 100 pages...

If you right-click on the Table and select Properties, click on the
Positioning Button and you will see that the Vertical Position is set to
28.12cm from the margin. Change it to TOP. Then remove the superfluous
paragraph break in the middle that is splitting the table.

But why is the table set to Wrap anyway?

Cheers that fixed it & thanks for the tip - i don't usually use that anchor
to select the table but i prolly have done

Just experimenting it seems the text-wrapping feature is restricted to the
page (not the whole document) so i can still use text on pages above/below
the table - is that right?

Thanks that works fine too

It's like BoniM mentioned - the slightest nudge on the table anchor point
and it makes the position fixed - this has happened to me dozens of times
and not knowing that tables can be 'positioned', i've ended up creating a
brand new document and pain-stakingly copy/pasting everything into it -
maybe there should be a pop-up to tell you when this happens

I'm not sure what you mean by why the table is set to wrap - can you
explain? - i use tables all the time & it might be something else that's
been tormenting me

If you right-click in the Table and select Table Properties, you will see
that the table Text Wrapping is set to AROUND. If you clear that by checking
the NONE option and the table will also start behaving correctly again.

Right... by default text will appear above and below, you only use wrap if
you want regular text to appear beside a table.
