Hi all, anyone know how to fix this?

A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system. This is to
do with a soundcard. Whenever
a mate tries to play sound this msg appears.

Any info appreciated.

Thanx

Well thats the prob XP doesnt know
what the soundcard is JJ.

It installed everything else to do with sound
but not the soundcard driver/s itself. The only
way we can do that is to open the case and find
out what the card is. Windowsupdate couldnt
or didnt detect the card and give a driver for it.

Not ALL devices will get a driver listed on WindowsUpdate. You will need to
find the make/model of the sound card and visit the manufacturer's web site
for the correct XP drivers.

Y.

Well i'm not relying on the site.

And as I said, since the soundcard isnt listed
in Device Manager, there isnt anything else to do
but to open the case.

And umm I cant check the documentation
can I., since its not my soundcard and its
not here with me. I'm helping someone in Sweden.

Well, as above the case i'm talking about isnt
here either. Even if i tell the person what to note
she wouldnt even know what she's looking at lol.

Paul;
I love it! I'm in the USA watching, as it were. You're in New Zealand helping
someone in Sweden. With other people from around the world helping you.
Cool!

Yer thanx Wes.You got it. I'm in NZ!

I'm usually on Mirc (Austnet Server), helping
out ppl who have PC probs. BUT this
is a bit tricky.I havent come across this
error before. I thought it might have something
to do with the drivers, or IRQ/memory address,
as the person, I'm helping said this thing worked
bout 2-3 days ago! BUT suddenly died.

I dont think most ppl know that newsgroups like
this even exist!

Or if they do, they dunno how to get access to them.

And some of them are quite good! And pretty
informative. Thanx to to PCButts for AIDA.

I'll check it out. Altho, it's funny. If XP
doesnt detect the soundcard, if its installed.

The System info in XP, doesnt pick it up
either, and it doesnt appear in Device Manager
BUT the other sound/video codecs etc do,
under Sound/Video and Game Controllers.

Why would AIDA? Its better than nothing!

Cheers!

Hello Paul;
Have a look at this:
Unknown Devices
http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/

[By checking Device Manager for unknown devices and extracting information
from it, this program attempts to figure out what the device is. You might not
have to open your case or look up random numbers off of PCI cards to figure
out what they are.
Limitations:
- This program only knows about PCI and AGP
devices. It will not be able to help with ISA based
devices and original PCMCIA cards.]
[Tips:
- Press F3 to search the selected text on the
internet. (Ctrl-F3 to search without the "+drivers")
- Using an item under Full Details for a websearch
will likely give you better results]

I use Aida also and I don't think it can find anything that XP can't.
However, Unknown Devices has a hell of a list of devices.

[...as the person I 'm helping said this thing worked about 2-3 days ago!
BUT suddenly died.]
It would be interesting to me to hear the full story when this gets resolved.
Keep having fun.

In my opinion, Aida32 doesn't show much more than msinfo32 does. I think it is built on top
of msinfo32. Same with Sisoft SANDRA and Belarc Advisor. They just have some added features like benchmarks
and make a convenient place to do many things.

AIDA32 will report hardware and software serial numbers, it
reports the actual mfg'r of hardware, it shows operating
conditions, temperatures.
