I want to fit a table of contents into the column of a table

The TOC has:

Heading........................................................................................................................................................................................Page
no

I would like to reduce the leading dots to fit the column but still incl
page numbers:

Heading........................................................................................................Page
no

I find I can reduce the width after inserting the TOC by format>tabs

but each time i refresh the TOC it resizes the leader

Any ideas????

Just thought - if i define a style with reduced tab widths and use this
style in the TOC??

who knows?

Each level of the TOC is an individual style named TOC1, TOC2, etc.
Define each of them as you wish.

i found you can define the tab stops for the table of contents - but it
seems to remove the leading .................'s - anyway to reinstate those?

Seek and thou shalt find - It is possible to redefine the tab stops of a
TOC - and the leading dots ........... are part of the Tab definition

You soul not format the TOC after it is generated because the formatting
you apply will be lost when the TOC is regenerated, Rather, modify the
TOC styles (TOC1, TOC2, etc.) to get what you want.

However, since all TOC styles are by default set to update automatically,
changes made to TOC entries should be propagated to the styles.
