Will it be ok to use a 12v 1500mA adapter on a scanner that states
12v 1200mA??
Is it just that 1500mA is more than sufficient and will not do any
harm??
Everyone has posted that it will be ok and they *might* be right, but it's
not that simple. Every power supply has an internal resistance that causes
the voltage to reduce as more power is taken from it. The original power
supply might have been 12 volts but reduce to 9 volts under load. Because
the new power supply can supply more amperage it will have a lower internal
resistance and the voltage will drop less under load. Maybe it will still
produce close to 12V at 1200mA and cause damage to your scanner because it
is designed for 9. Also, if you measure the power pack with no load it could
be putting out as much as 19 volts and only reduce to 12V under load, but
your scanner might not use enough amperage to get it down to 12V so could be
running on, say, 15 volts. The other thing is the manufacturers ratings
could just be different. I've had first hand experience with this blowing up
a TV to VGA converter with a more powerful 9V power pack. If the scanner is
expensive then I'd advise getting the original supply.
