I am an ex-network guy and was told something interesting today at my real
estate office. I was told that the former IT person setup the network,
running Win2000 Server, to copy all the files off all of the clients
computers WITHOUT the users knowledge. So, I had a couple of questions..

1. Is this possible without any kind of backup software?

2. What are the legalities of this? We are all independent contractors, so
the computers are not the property of the office.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pretty simple. The former IT guy set up the clients
and knows the administrator passwd. That means
he can access the hidden share of your hard disk(s),
and copy off anything he wants. Looks like:

START --> RUN --> \\computername\c$
and the remote computer will ask for login / passwd
as admin, and the entire contents of the C-drive
will pop up on his screen. As for LEGAL ...?? ..
surely you jest. The entire computer industry is
beyond belief regards its criminal behavior. Why
the heck are you on a lan? That is exactly the same
thing as sitting buck naked in the middle of the
street.

I dont think it is a matter of the current admin accessing the c$ share,
she can barely turn on a computer. I wanted to find out if there is an
automated process to copy client hard drives without knowledge.

'copy all the files off all of the clients
computers WITHOUT the users knowledge' - This statement
is a little misleading, it is almost certainly using
folder redirection, where the folders only appear to be
stored locally on the clients, but are based on the
server.

Michael.

is there an SMS server in your environment?

probably not... but it is most likely that the hidden administrative shares
are being used.

That, or the guy that told you that is full of crap.
