Anyone got Canon Lide 60 to work in XP?

I've been using an Epson scanner for a while and recently tried a Canon Lide
60. I haven't been able to get this to work due to a driver problem. With
the Canon software (ArcSoft PhotoStudio), it just complains about not being
able to open the Twain source. With Photoshop, it complains about a missing
DLL: rmslantc.dll

This DLL is actually present in C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL60 but it seems the
system can't find it. I copied this to the \windows directory and it then
complained about the next DLL (iop.dll I think). So I copied the entire
C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL60 directory to \windows and Photoshop now just
gives a "Could not open the Twain Source" error.

I've tried a few other obvious things including an updated driver (Scangear
11.110 from 1 Dec 2005) and repeated uninstall/system restore and
re-install. I was able to get the scanner to work with VueScan so it's not a
hardware problem (but no good because I want to use it with photoshop and I
don't see why I should have to buy extra software).

Looking through the newsgroups it seems this is a common problem with LIDE
scanners so can anyone recommend a replacement?

Thanks,

Jay.

Hi...

Don't use XP - so take this with a grain of salt if you wish, but at
least in every version of windows that I have used .dll's generally
belong in windows/system; not windows root.

Take care.

Ken

I suspect that you'll find that .dll's generally belong in
windows/system...

I've got a LiDE20 and it works fine with WinXP Home. I've installed it
twice now, second time after I rebuilt my computer with new hard disks.
There are a total of 18 files in C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL20 dating from
1998 to 2003. There's also a folder called C:\CanoScan\ and that has
several DAT files amongst others.

Probably best to remove the Canon drivers from Add/Remove Programs and
start again. Make sure the scanner is unplugged from the PC when to do
the installation. Only plug it in when the installation asks you to or
after it has completely finished, including a reboot if it asks you to.

Thanks Mark but I tried all that. Several times :-) It's strange because
I've used another canon scanner on the same PC without the slightest problem
but this one has me beat. I took the thing back to the shop today and I'll
probably get the Epson 3490. Overkill for what I'll be using it for but I
trust Epson more than Canon at the moment.

Cheers,

Jay.

True they probably should be stored there but windows actually has a list of
directories that it searches for DLLs including the system directory
(\windows\system), windows directory (\windows), the current directory, the
directory where the application was loaded and the directories in the PATH
variable. For some reason either the DLLs are not being installed into the
correct directory or the PATH variable isn't being set up properly. The fact
that it works on some systems probably means it's something like a naming
conflict that's causing the problem. I expect Canon simply isn't testing the
installation enough.

The scanner went back to the shop today. I'll probbaly get an Epson 3490.
