anyone got any idea when sp3 is coming out for xp?

Hi Robin,

I think the operative word in Bill's note about SP3 is "REFRESH" -- I have
seen a version number for the refresh but do not remember where it
was...probably on Microsoft's IT site with all the other problems in the SP3
betas.

FYI, I have heeded the warnings about NOT installing on mission critical
systems yet as my first taste of the SP3 was pretty sour.

Robb

I've seen a build number somewhere as well, and I'm sure there is one in the
files somewhere. The fact that it is no longer visible in properties of My
Computer seems significant to me.

What kinds of problems?

The only SP3 issues I've seen were several machines on which it would not
install--due to an issue which was also common to SP1 and SP2, and covered
by a KB article, with a fix which worked without too much effort.

Second half of April 2008 for Chinese [Simplified], English, French,
German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish versions.

Approximately 21 days later for the remaining languages.

No, but I don't think it will change significantly from what is already
out there.

The current AU download of SP3, which is public, and labelled rc2
refresh--has no build number--it just reads SP3 when installed.

Note that the AU package is different from the standalones. I don't
believe the standalones are as near to final as the AU version is.

Just to support Bill's theory, it looks like preparations are afoot to
launch SP3 "as is"

Hi Bill,

I had some annoying IE lockups (IE Version 6.0) and rather strange video
display irregularities that weren't to my liking...the uninstall was simple
and effective and I left it alone since the first version came off my
machine.

Do I dare have another go with it or wait for the FINAL?

Robb

I'd update the video driver to the latest from your machine vendor or the
chipset maker, depending, and then try it again. See the message from occam
nearby--I think it is completed--I suspect they are just juggling traffic
issues in choosing when and how to release it.

Thanks, Bill...I trust your judgement and will go forth with the SP3 RC2
Refresh...I take it yours is running fine?

Robb

I have it running fine on at least three machines, and perhaps as many as
half a dozen or a dozen--I've lost track.

There's a management app on the SBS-2003 server that shows this--I should
look at it sometime and see how far I got...

While I have in the past often participated in beta programs, I do not
have the time for this now; I will wait for the official release.

And even for the final release I will take several precautions:
- clean my system from junk (CCleaner)
- make 100% sure no malware is anywhere on the system
- run CHKDSK
- defragment
- take a full backup of my C: drive (Windows install partition)
- shut down all running processes
- run SP3 install
have you installed it? any problems?

Hi Bill,

Well, I did install XP SP3 RC2 'Refresh' but again found some strange
beghavior with IE 6.0 as I previously mentioned. It seems that if I click
on the "e" on Quicklauncher to go to my hompage (www.msn.com) IE instantly
crashes asking me to send the error report to Microsoft. I always do that.

However, if I go to START | RUN and type in www.msn.com the page loads fine,
no crash. Is that off the wall or what? Other than that I think things look
OK. (I still had to diddle around with the monitor settings to brings thing
back to normal again).

Any thoughts?

Robb

P.S. My Computer tells my I have XP SP3 Ver. 3311.

You have an old version of SP3.

I believe the only way to get the refresh version is to use the
WindowsUpdate method--download the first (small) executable at the download
page, and then visit WU multiple times installing everything offered on an
express scan. There may be a 10 to 20 minute wait required between the
final pre-sp3 update, and SP3 being offered. If you have 3311 installed, I
would recommend uninstalling it, then visiting Windows Update.

I'm not familiar with quicklauncher. If it is a third-party add-in, is
there a newer version?

Is your video driver current?

Ah-ha!!! I screwed it up again, eh? OK, back to the drawing board,
Bill...I'll uninstall v3311 and hope WU updates me? That's very strange,
but will do as you suggest.

BTW, Quick Launch is that little toolbar on the bottom left of your screen
next to START...if you don't see it, rightclick on the bottom line of your
desktop, leftclick on Toolbars, and then put a checkmark next to Quick
Launch. Simple but very helpful.

My video drivers are updated, yes.

OK - I thought that I knew what quicklaunch is, but I didn't understand your
reference to the "e".

Now that I am actually awake, it makes perfect sense to me.

This is odd indeed--I would expect that the quicklaunch icon and having IE
start as the result of typing in a URL in start, run--would result in the
same set of code running.

I would recommend looking at third-party add-ins to IE--even "standard" ones
such as a Google toolbar. If you use such toolbars, remove them, then
reinstall after doing a fresh download from the vendors site--so you have
the latest code.

No problem, I'll uninstall and let WU reinstall the SP3 and see what
happens...thanks again, Bill.
