why keep supporting old tech?

Because I spent a lot of money on a top of the line AGP card which
meets my needs. Those do not include gaming. I don't want to spend
another hundred or so dollars for a PCI-E video card which will give me
only what I already have.

granted upgrade boards are nice, but come on! the future awaits us!

However, at

http://www.asrock.com/product/AM2NF3-VSTA.htm

they say that it doesn't support Win 98. And at

http://www.asrock.com/support/download.asp?Model=AM2NF3-VSTA

they do not include any Win 98 driers.

With me that is a no sale. I use win 98/Opera for its superior
performance, less overhead, and better securuty, fewer holes and back
doors.

But it is a nforce3 chip set, not their latest nforce4. Nforce3 came
out with socket 754 and I thought everyone was still supporting win 98
at that time.

Part of the purpose in the 'new' tech is to force us to upgrade, ie spend
money. For example, dvi is going away and 'display port' will replace it.
Anyone with an LCD monitor might want to upgrade their video card and
*SURPRISE*, there are no more dvi cards.

Upgrading your video card would mean upgrading your monitor. Will 'display
port' offer so much new functionality and capability that it is worth
spending between $500 and $1000 for the upgrades? Somehow, I doubt it.

Because it's more than up to the job. PCI-e for example was pretty much
released to provide a new revenue stream as AGP cards hadn't even come
close to maxing out 4x let alone 8x.

even so, the quandry still exists: if you want a better cpu then you have
to upgrade other parts too. one thing always leads to another.

The ASRock 939DUAL has AGP, PCIE-16, and a slot for an AM2 expansion
board. The expansion board costs extra but has sockets for DDR2 RAM.
I hope this helps.

no, it doesn't since the daughter is using one in her computer and the AGP
card is coming out asap!

Damn straight. You want the new big brother CPU to run the new big
brother operating systems you shell out the money.

You won't have hackers and the government running multiple operating
systems on your new computer (think SONY RootKits on steroids)
unless you $pend the money.

Nothing involving DRM is going to run on old systems.

Just wait until you get a load of the new hard drives. Bye Bye IDE.
You've heard of subscription software ? Pretty soon they'll be
charging you rent for your data storage.
