This is the first time this has happened since I started using SpyBot
a couple of years ago.

My first couple of attempts at scanning for problems since the latest
update and my computer crashes a few minutes after I start the scan.

Just to be on the safe side, I've updated and ran scans with my other
spyware programmes (AdAware SE, AdwareAway, Spyware Doctor) and no
problems. Also updated and ran CWShredder - which found and fixed one
problem and then ran an online scan on the TrendMicro website:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ . That scan found seven
problems, including two trojans and a keylogger!!!

After removing all the problems I rebooted and tried using SpyBot
another couple of times - each causing a crash just a few minutes into
the scan. I'm wondering if the crash might have something to do with
the latest update. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Thanks, b

It's been 2 or 3 days since I downloaded the last updates and I've had
no problems. I usually do a scan every 24 hours or so.
I just checked for updates now and none were available, but I just did
a scan and again I had no problems.

pretty beefy definitions list. No crash, no hiccups.

Come to think of it, I actually did that too. I have the latest
version of CCleaner on my desktop and use it regularly.

BTW - my entire system is becoming increasingly unstable and this
could be just part of it. My computer is around six years old (Pentium
III 733) and I think the motherboard may be feeling the strain. As a
result, I'm just about to replace my computer with an upgrade. Just
trying to hold on until then ...

This may not be related but of all the progs I run on my PC, SpyBot
consumes more CPU power than any other, normally around 80% CPU
usage ...in hot weather I have to avoid running it at all because of
CPU overheating problems.

Hi,

XP here, and all fine.

However, I've had similar issues with other high "useage" programs, and
like hummingbird says, it points to an overheating CPU possibly.

Try running the scan with the case open / clean the heatsink / check
the CPU fan etc.

Try running the PC with the side of the case off / open and a desktop
fan blowing in etc.

Sounds like you still have a compromised computer. I'd uninstall the
program and reinstall it, update it and try again. If it still locks up,
then maybe another scan at the Panda site will help figure out what
remains:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

since the (excellent) Trendmicro scan might have missed something.

i had a similar problem
on last comp with WIN2KPro.

I was able to tweak around it:

goto settings --> file sets

uncheck all radio boxes except 3 or 4,
run spybot and repeat,
using different file sets.

i resolved the problem using Window spchk.exe,
some patches had failed, and had to be reinstalled.

Windows 2000:
DownloadDownload W2kspchk.exe now
<http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000pro/Utility/Q279631/NT
5/EN-US/W2kSPChk.exe>

tiny url to the same file
<http://tinyurl.com/ftlln>

it's a batch file, and you must be
logged on as Admin.

RTFM

good luck...

This is strange and a bit disconcerting. Even though things seem to be
running well at the moment, out of curiosity I've gone to the Panda
site and started a scan - which has been running for around and hour
and a half now. So far, it has detected "Spyware" numbering a
staggering 419 !!!

I have yet to see the final results and the free online version of
Panda Active only detects - it doesn't remove or disinfect. To do that
I have to purchase the full license (USD19.95).

What I find difficult to understand is how this "Spyware" could have
slipped by Spyware Blaster and not picked up by regular scans using
SpyBot, Spyware Doctor and AdwareAway and Ad-Aware SE - all of which
are updated regularly. Nor were they detected by my Trendmicro scan.

Is Panda Active (and Panda Active Pro) so much better than all these
other programmes combined? Being a tad cynical, I can't help but
wonder if perhaps this amazing result (419 so far) isn't some sort of
ploy to encourage me to buy that license from Panda. Does anyone else
have experience of this product? Thanks, b

Having encountered further problems with SpyBot (crashed again), I
uninstalled, reinstalled, updated and it crashed again. So I got a
licensed version of ActiveScan and my first scan with the licensed
version turned up & disinfected 76 spyware and 1 hacker.

I tried SpyBot again and it ran perfectly (BTW - no "problems"
either). So thank you for the advice. Looking at the ActiveScan report
it appears that, despite thinking I'd deleted all the cookies in
Firefox, there were still a LOT of spyware cookies hiding away in my
Firefox profile. I say "hiding" because they certainly didn't show
when I checked for cookies using Firefox tools.
