Had an operation today, on my big toe, for about the fifth time.

I honest to God used up the last remaining stock of their local anasthetic - i needed so much and it _just_wasnt_working!!

It took an hour and fifteen minutes for my toe to get numb enough to start work on and even then it was really quite painful. Am in pain now as it has worn off pretty quick. Had my two ibuprofen... waiting for them to kick in.

No driving for a few weeks which is a right bugger!!!

I'm not even allowed to shower for a few days/weeks which sucks.

Oh well.

I think it depends on if they inject it in to the correct place - but I'm no expert so it's probably not true ;) I needed loads of injections when I went to the dentist once, as it just seemed to do nothing at all - however the next time I went back I told them about this and he injected it into a many smaller places. Worked a treat that time :D

Hope the pain killers work!

A Mallet on the head would do the trick!Mind you, you will have a terrible hang-over after it:D

Hope you feel better soon, and the operation works for you this time CP;)

In the end he did a root block - so numbed the whole toe. He said that it works for some people but not for others... and no-one actually knows how a local works - there are only theories. It was discovered by mistake!

Cheers guys :)

In a Local-Pub maybe?:D

Not local anesthetics specifically but yes. I am immune or allergic to almost all painkillers. When I broke my back the only painkillers they could consistently give me were paracetamol & Ibuprofen & even they have a reduced effect on me. They tried all sorts of other stuff but no go. They also used a muscle relaxant to stop my back going into spasm from the pain & that helped reduce the pain quite a bit, but nevertheless I had the hospital pain clinic all flumoxed as they tried to find something to work on me. They tell me that I'm going to have to take paracetamol & Ibuprofen for the rest of my life now... but I've already got them on the run... I'm down to 1/4 - 1/2 the daily dose of paracetamol & 2/3 the daily dose of Ibuprofen (me heap big sneaky & don't like medicines) although I still take the muscle relaxant as, if my back muscles do go into spasm, then I'm just useless.

So yes Chris, you have all my sympathy. The experience would've been awful & to have had to endure it so many times :( I do hope things improve quickly :)
