They look great in the reviews and tests compared to the 6600 GT's and 6800
GT's .. I'm wondering how they really are in the average Joes' computer and
not the test stand.

Don't own one, but on the groups I've seen tests where the stock X800XL on a
non overclocked A64 3000+ with 1 gig RAM did about 10,000 on 3DMark '03 and
4800 on '05. This was with slower PC2700 memory on an MSI K8T board. If
anything, I find his scores on the low side....even accounting for the lower
speed memory. The onboard memory controller should give higher scores. His
9800 Pro score for '03 on the same box was 5800. My 9800 Pro at stock speeds
does 6000+ on a Barton 3200 with 1 gig dual channel 3200.

Mine is excellent.

I think I get ~5k in 3dMark05 and 57k in Aquamark3 on a AMD64 3000+ with
1GB.

What X800XL do you have?

I was looking at the HIS X800XL IceQ ..and that looks sweet with the extra
cooling ... but I can't find it anywhere and don't know how much more
expensive it would be than getting an X800 XL with the standard cooling ..
and getting a after market GPU cooler.

While it does not have the X800XL in it specifically, there was a good
article that shows what you can expect from a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 system and an
Athlon 64 3800+ with similar high-end video cards. You will find from the
article that the 2.8GHz P4 falls far short of being able to show some of the
high-end cards out there to their potential. Check it out...

I myself have a 2.8GHz P4, and while I did briefly consider getting an
X800XL (since I can get the AGP version for $399 CDN right now), I decided
that I'm better off putting that $399 towards a new computer (and new video
card) next year. I already have a 9800 Pro right now, so I'm not pressed to
make changes to my system. To each their own, however.

This is for a new build with an Athlon 64 CPU. Need a PCI card and am
dithering between and X800XL and a 6600 GT. I have an NF7-S with a 98000
PRO right now, OCed XP 2800.

Stop dithering. The X800XL wipes the floor with the 6600GT.
