Hey-if anyone is still there and hasn't written me off completely-can you tell me why I keep losing my sound? Just about every other time I start up, the sound is gone. I have gone through all the steps in help and support, including uninstalling and re-installing, and nothing works but to shut down and restart. I get "drive can't start, no active mixer devices, error:code 10"- if this helps. I would really appreciate any help.

Have you checked the soundcard manufacturer's website for the latest drivers
and software for your card?

Do what Micheal suggested and if that does not help (perhaps there are no
new drivers) try to move your sound card, providing it is a card and not a
part of a motherboard, to a different PCI slot. If you have other cards,
such as network card, modem card or whatever else, pull them out temporarily
and see if your sound card behaves any better. While you have the Sound card
out you may as well also clean the contacts before putting the card back.
Use pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Also check your speaker wires.

Have you checked the device manager to see how many different sound devices are installed? (right click "my computer" then the "hardware" tab then "device manager", for XP or just goto "System" in the control panel that's an easier method to check) What happens is it could be your computer has a stand alone sound card, one built into the mother board and your computer is having troubles with drivers for it's trying to load both cards.
