LOL, Mel. They're on the way, Fenton. Since most malware targets the
Windows kernel and file system (FAT32, NTFS), and Vista users don't
appear to be any smarter than XP users, it is just a matter of time. And
not much time, at that.
Vista vs. Viruses

Interesting article. It contains a link to Natalya Kaspersky's
article:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kl_ceo_vista
concerning the competition of MS av solution(s) which is also worth
taking a look at IMO. The question is whether or not MS will ever be
able to offer solutions anywhere near as good and effective as those
offered by Kaspersky and others. We know MS hasn't done well so far,
which she points out.
But then there's the issue raised in the first article:
******************************************
It should be noted that Microsoft’s attempts to increase system
stability overall has had side effects. By making it impossible for
anyone/ anything to access the kernel, Microsoft has made it
impossible for security solution vendors to implement certain
functionality within their products. As a result, it's currently not
possible to use the full range of effective tools developed by
antivirus vendors in the security area. This applies not only to
technologies designed to combat rootkits, but also proactive
protection technologies used to detect unknown threats, which have
been implemented in products for previous operating system versions.
Virus writers are now in some senses in a better position - they're
not required to tackle PatchGuard head on, and rootkits will simply be
able to disable it.
*******************************************
Seems the KAV6 developers (and other security vendors) are frustrated
by the inability to offer protections/technologies they've invested
much time and money developing.
