I'd like to have TweakUI back. Especially, I'd like to get rid of the text
"shortcut" on shortcuts I make. They're really annoying.

Thanks

Can't you just right click them and rename?

go here to get rid of short cut arrows - get this

Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover (FxVisor 1.0)

There is a Tweak VI for Vista
IMO the freebie is useless
I installed it - then uninstalled it
Your opinion may vary

I don't think its the arrows that the OP want to remove I think its the word
'shortcut' on (or under) all the icons.

You're right alright, the post said - text shortcut, see original post,
below:

Remove "- Shortcut" from Shortcuts

* Start Regedit with administrative rights.
* With Regedit browse to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

* Find and edit the "link" value from 1D 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00.
* Close Regedit and reboot or logoff for the change to take effect.

Hi again, yes, you're right, I wanted to remove the text "shortcut" that
Vista automatically adds to new shortcuts. I know I can edit them manually,
but that's a 15 second pain in the neck. Getting rid of the arrow is an
added bonus.

I found a program from another post that helped me. It's TweakVI at
http://www.totalidea.com/content/tweakvi/tweakvi-down.php
the free version does what I want, plus other stuff.

Thanks for all the responses.

Havent heard of the simple RENAME option????

I see you've already found a solution. As for a version of TweakUI from MS
for Vista - they're not out yet but keep an eye out for their appearance.
Historically the Power Tools for any version of Windows are released after
the operating system. How long after varies but they do show up eventually.

To suppress the addition of the " - Shortcut" suffix:

Start -> Run -> regedit

Navigate to:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer"

In the right-hand pane, double-click the value named 'link' and change it's
data to:

00 00 00 00

Log off & back on to make Explorer aware of the change.

Thanks, Keith.
Now if you would be so kind as to explain to us how to remove the arrow
overlay from Shortcuts?

Under:

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons"

create a new value:

Name: 29
Type: Reg_SZ
Value: <path to icon>,<IconIndex>

The problem has been that 'regular' blank icons
(C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll,49) have been displaying as black squares
rather than transparent after rebooting.

This post claims to have an icon that works, but I can't get their
registration to work !

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=495355

I've been using a built-in blank icon that shows only minor artifacts (faint
square outline in XL icon mode, and left & top black outline in detail/list
mode). If you want to try it, use:

C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,11

for the data in the above regedit.
