I Need to return it for new drive,. this one fialed, can't acces my
files because I get system lockups, and
the drive is make noise. Is there
any way to get access to my files maybe, so I can back up. I have to
send the damn drive back with files on it.. is there a way
to WIPEOUT the files on the drive I am sending back, like maybe use a
strong Magnete or something else to
try to wipe the data off the drive, some sort of wav of some sort? any
suggestions. :)

Normally not. A logic card swap to an identical drive may allow you to get
the data back, but that will void the warranty and isnt guaranteed to work.

Fraid not. Thats one situation where you need
to encrypt the files that matter before it dies.

Wont work with modern drives and anything you are likely
to have. And that will void the warranty if it did work.
some sort of wav of some sort?

God knows what this is about.

Is that like a one finger salute ? |-)
any suggestions. :)

You could just cut to the chase and hang yourself or sumfin |-)

If you cannot access the drive, there is no way to wipe the
contents without voiding the warranty.

IMHO, if the data is valuable enough to interest the repair staff,
$100 is nothing compared to that data, and you may as well destroy the
disk.

If you cannot access the drive, there is no way to wipe the
contents

BTW, if you do have access to the drive, there's no way to wipe the
contents as soon as some sectors are "relocated" (i.e. marked as bad
by the hard disk itself, and thus impossible to access).

So?

Quite true. If you need a wipe of all sectors and cannot tolerate
some sectors not to be overwritten, check the number of relocated
sectors first. S.M.A.R.T. usually lists them.

Additional problem: The SMART numbers may not be true when the
drive claims zero relocated sectors, since some vendor may want
their product to look better than it is....

Yes, I think your right in my case,. damn it,. I didn't want it to come
to this,. 120gig drive had alot of stuff
on it, #100.00 is nothing compared to somebody getting there hads on it,.
I am am the type in which I trust
nobody. Frustrating because I can see directorys and files,. when I try to
delete them or access them, the drive
makes my system lockup, and theres a clicking noise,. never had this
happen yet. Tell me, would you trust
the people in the warehouse who will be doing the testing? I don't DAMIT.
the last drive I sent back
I was able to make multible passes erasing the drive.. but this SUCKS! : (

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

If your data is that damn sensitive, you should be encrypting it in
the first place. Then you don't have to worry about whatever moron
"gets his hands on" your drive.

Indeed. Especially as this will also protect against the disk
being stolen.

True, I know guys, I have been wanting to do that. I should encrypt more,.
but I just can't do it all. I should have
anticipated this happening, and I know it does. Man if my shit got stolen,
that would be a real drag.. if I only had a
vault I would put my stuff in it.
