Is there any storage device where, if i install a software on it, it
will execute after a certain given time frame? Is that possible?
Are there self - destructing CDs like those on Mission Impossible?I
mean, those which will work for 24 hours or so, and then refuse to
work?
Another specific requirement is that it should fit into an average
computer, so im not talking about a zip drive or anything..
let me know guys,
thanks,

"execute" in computer terms means "run a program"
I think you mean "erase itself" or "self destruct" ?

Some of the cheapest CD-Rs are like that ;)

Whatever you use, it could be copied onto permanent media within
those 24hours anyway....

You need a full server for that. If you use Linux/FreeBSD as OS,
you can just do an 'at'-job.

Which is the central problem. This problem is unsolved, see, e.g., the
failing efforts of the music-industry to make music uncopyable.

You need a full server for that.

Or Windows NT Workstation, 2000 Pro or XP Pro.

The AT command schedules commands and programs to run on a computer
at a specified time and date... see Help.

Which covers also the self-destruction in 24h part of your request.

Unfortunately that will only be a partial self-destruction.
True to MS philosopy to _never_ do something right, because
then you could not sell the next version.

That's what made America great - planned obsolescence.

It beats building pyramids.

Actually, there are such devices, and we filed a patent on something
that does exactly what you ask a few months ago. They don't
self-destruct, but they utilize some hardware encryption and can be
programmed to run for as many times as you set.

We don't have a real-time clock in it, but if you want a 24-hour
window, then we could handle it by having the software query a known
external time server via the internet that uses some special
encryption so it can't easily be spoofed.

After whatever parameters you set the programs can be made to erase
themselves or just stop running, whatever is appropriate. The device
(we're going to call it the SANTOOL) can then be reprogrammed.

If you are interested in something like this then goto
http://www.santools.com/contact.htm and fill out the contact form.
I'll get back to you.

Does not solve the copying-off issue. And in what broken patent
system can you file a patent for something this obvious?

I will make myself more clear. This is shravan here. I am looking for
a storage device, where, if I load a software, it will delf delete
within 24 hours. Basically, I am looking for a CD or someting that
"stop working" after 24 hours or so depending upon what time I
program it to.
I am interested in buying this. I will repeat what I am loooking for:
I am looking for a CD or any such storage device, which would stop
working after a specified amount of time, such as 24 hours. It would
be an added advantage if this storage device can fit into a standard
CD player. This would be paid for. Please let me know if you can
provide it to me.
thanks,

Find a high-tech R&D company. The product does not exist, someone has to
develop it for you.

If he comes up with a self destructing CD, then people will just copy it.

I think Circuit City tried to market Cd's that expired under the DIVX
trademark (not to be confused with encryption format) that was similar
to what you ask for. Here is a link to an article about Spectradisk
corp that apparently make discs that expire after a set period of time:

Hi, thanks for that. But could you tell me which kind of company I
should contact, and how much it would cost me? Any ideas? I am really
thinking of this product, and would like to have it developed as
cheaply as possible.

The US? Bear in mind that Zvi Netiv was awarded US Patent # 5,809,138 for
filling up a disk with junk a few years back. The patent office takes just
about anything as long as it's filed on the proper forms and then lets the
courts decide whether it's a valid patent.
