I'm still running messenger 4.7 (on windows xp). Is there any sign of a
newer release. It's been a long time since there was an upgrade.

I think 5.0 is already out. Some of the functionality has been
transferred to MSN Messenger 6.2 which some people who
install SP2 and use Outlook will find useful.

I wasn't aware of 6.2 being out there. However, the the 6-series was
available. I kept seeing posts that recommended that XP (messenger) user
"not" use any of them.

I checked MS's download site and the latest I see there is 4.7. Do you know
where the later version is accessible from?
Thanks. Diana

Yes, I do. I went to www.microsoft.com and clicked on downloads
which is the second item down under _Resources_ That brought me to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

That page shows the five Most Popular Downloads; below it is a
little square box with a + inside it which expands if you click on it
to show the next 45 downloads. Number 48 brings you to this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9f-6388-4193-8002-be55584c1ac1&displaylang=en

Windows Messenger 5.0
"Microsoft® Windows® Messenger allows real-time communication with other
people who use Windows Messenger and who are signed in to the same instant
messaging service. It is the instant messaging client of choice for
businesses in managed environments."

SH: #16 download, MSN Messenger 6.2, brings you to this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ee-4bfa-42bf-a42e-417d748cefa1&displaylang=en

If you should ever need it. I am going to include some of my research on how
to use Outlook (which will work for OE also) default email notification,
your regular email account, and automatic email notification from Hotmail,
now provided by MSN Messenger, which used to be provided by Windows
Messenger. So this isn't relevant to you now, but may benefit others, they
can run at the same time --- you can skip it.

___________________________________________________

SH: In either Outlook or Outlook Express you can have both your regular
email account and another account(s) including hotmail.

Suppose you already have a non-hotmail email account in Outlook
and you want to add your hotmail email account. Use Tools,
email accounts, add new account, choose http and the rest is
fairly automatic, since it is a Microsoft program. It will look like this:

Outlook
Inbox
Sent
etc

Hotmail
Inbox
Sent
etc

Click on the Inbox of the account that has new mail.
So in IE under Tools, Internet Options, Programs
set Email to Outlook and your Hotmail account will be
contained in the Outlook display. If you reply or compose
in Hotmail there, it uses your hotmail email address/server
or you can use your other email address and its server. You
can make standard account the default email client here and
receive notifications when new email arrives = an envelope.
MSN Messenger 6.2 can be set to notify you when email
arrives sent to your hotmail/passport address = a big window.

"Make An Email Account The Default [SH: from MS Help]

If you are using more than one account, you can specify which account
is the default so that it will be the first account to be processed.

Microsoft Outlook sends your messages using the default account unless you
click the Accounts button (next to the Send button) on the message to choose
another account to use for that message.

1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3. In the list, click the e-mail account you want, and then click Set
as Default."

SH: You can make an icon for Outlook and/or MSN 6.2 for the
desktop; then drag it to the taskbar to the right of "START" so
it is available if your IE browser window is open. Some functionality
of Windows Messenger is being transferred to MSN Messenger 6.2.
MSN 6.2 can startup and signin automatically or it can be started
automatically, not signed in, or only be started manually and signed in.

You are welcome,
Stephen

Hi,

Windows Messenger 5.0 is actually considered separate from Windows Messenger 4.7 (although it
does upgrade), simply because a lot of the functionality within the older versions of 4.x
aren't available in 5.0 (as its moved to MSN Messenger 6.x).

In terms of a Windows Messenger update to 5.0, I believe there will be one in the future, but
it will be concentrating on the Live Communications Server support in 5.0 as opposed to being
a continuation of the 4.x releases.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you so much for all the details. I'm going to hold off on downloading
until the "real" upgrade to messenger (for XP) is available. Too many
people have run into problems by installing the version not specifically
designed to work with a specific OS. Can I assume that I can setup my
"Outlook" (instead of OE), to receive hotmail email. I only use outlook
express for the newsgroups and don't really want to change that.

Thanks again. I'll keep your email for the other details you included.

Thanks for the comments on the upgrades. I've seen no shortage of those who
have upgraded and ran into unusual problems, although I hear too often that
they like the features, but I've held off and still want to wait for the
bonefide XP upgrade. Hopefully it arrives soon. It's already been wayyyyy
too long.

Yes, it takes about a minute. I keep my regular email address as the
default. If I want to "send" a page from IE, it uses my regular account.
They display in labelled areas which are seperated, it is not confusing.
