I have a PII 350 with Win98, it boots but I get no desktop, only the
wallpaper shows up, no icons or start button. I tried to get it to
boot from the norton SW pro CD but to no avail even though the bios
shows it as an option. Any suggestions before I rebuild the machine?

I tried the safe mode and the same thing happens.

If a problem is less than 5 days old in win98 then restart the system
pressing the F8 key and choose Command prompt only Dos or restart in
Msdos mode and type scanreg/restore and try an older reg(cab
file)backup, however you may have to re-install some programs and user
changes if they were installed after this date.

I tried scanreg/restore with no luck.

What has been done to the system since it last successfully booted?

If nothing obvious, is it possible you have a virus?
Do you have another system handy, whether running win98 or not, at
same site?

One method I've sometimes had success with, is to get a "feel" for
exactly when the system seems to stall, then <ctrl><alt><del> to see
what's loading/loading. This may take several tries, but it's
sometimes possible to catch a program just starting and kill it, so
you can continue to boot and use MSCONFIG (or other) to disable it
loading again.

You could try reinstalling windows ontop of itself, but if it's
something loading at boot that may not help.

How are you shutting down?

Do you have auto-hide enabled for the taskbar?

Get TweakUI...use the option to rebuild the icons.

But I think a quick reinstall might be called for...in the same
directory.

Or...try getting the latest update from MSFT. Sometimes these will
repair other problems at the same time.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

I tried scanreg/restore with no luck.

From a win98 boot floppy,

http://www.netpathway.com/~kramer/reinstall.html
http://www.bootdisk.com
Issue the command
sys c:
and press enter and see if that helps.
If not you could over-install win98 as a repair but even that may need
fixing as you shouldn't do this if you have updated Internet Explorer
but this can be fixed.

My initial thought was that it had a virus, which it may have had. i
tried to install a new copy of win 98 over the old one but it wouldn't
let me. Since there was no important data on the machine i elected to
rebuild it.

Thanks,
Gary
