thanks for that but its a bit difficult on a sunday, its easy if you have an
operating disc but with it being pre-installed ive no idea, got the seriel
number and thats it!

If you have no operating disc how are you going to re-install Windows XP
when you format the hard drive? Once you have formatted the hard drive you
have lost everything - hence Taurians suggestion to contact the
manufacturer's. You really do need the operating system recovery disc before
proceeding any further.

Incidentally, have you checked your PC manual to see if it gives
instructions on how to create a recovery disc?

It's asking for the administrator password you assigned to your windows
account.

How are you running? From Windows or booting the CD-Rom? For the former;

for the latter you'll probably need to ask Compaq support.

It doesn't ask for an administrator password - not when you are
re-installing. If you have a recovery disk you should only need to reboot
the PC, quickly insert the CD into the CD-ROM wait for a few seconds and you
should see 'press any key to boot for CD/DVD' press any key and then a menu
should appear asking what you want to do. In your case (having a recovery
disc) you will simply have to re-install windows xp. Just rememeber, though,
that you will lose everything on your machine, so i hope you have backed up
any important doecument/files that you need before re-installing.

I'm afraid it does on my Compac Presario John, the first boot drive is the
bios is cd/dvd rom, but with the recovery tools cd it does ask for the
administors password, and it doesn't give you the option to re-install
windows, just repair it...looks like i'll have to ring HP in the morning, ive
done many formats on my older machine but i had an OS Disc for that, with
this the only disc is the Compac Recovery Tools CD....its so very slow on
bootup too, wonder if thats anything to do with SP2, never had much success
with that.
Thanks again people!!

Boot a win98 startup disk and delete the non-dos partition or download the
Windows 2000 or XP boot disks and use them to blow away the partition.
