I paid £100 for win xp home (a long tme ago) what is the expected cost of
Vista likely to be?

Colin and a few others have already posted on this subject. The official
line from MSFT is "similar to current XP pricing."

I reckon from about £65 to £120 for UK versions. That was about the
difference between Home and Pro with XP at some point for retail non
upgrade versions. I see no reason to expect any different.

Last I heard, they were developing a new form of fees...something about a
"subscription" type deal, but it wasn't from a totally reliable source...

Seeing, contrary to popular wisdom,
isn't believing. It's where belief stops,
because it isn't needed any more.

Since Vista Ultimate (the version for Beta) includes all the features of
Enterprise,
you can safely bet that this version in its release will be at least $1000.
Most of us will have to watch the Ultimate Experience (a favorite word of
Microsoft) vanish with the expiration and settle for the lesser business
edition.

Nonsense. Besides it includes more features than just Enterprise. It
includes the media features of Home Premium, etc.

Pricing for Ultimate will probably be a few dollars more than XP Pro SP2.

btw, Enterprise will only be available to Software Assurance customers so
using the price of Enterprise and just saying 'Ultimate will be more' is not
helpful since Enterprise will not be a retail item.

Hmmm,
if it would be $1000 for retail, how much would cost the OEM - at least on
Multimedia systems?
On the other hand, real inflation (oil prices etc excluded :) of about
3%/year, at least for US$ would justify a price at some 20% higher - since
2000 to 2007 or whenever final Vista will be out.

does anyone have any idea ifyou will be able to pay an upgrade price if you
already have XP

Will the upgrade benefit from a retail or OEM variant source?

Or won't it matter?

Retail <=> Retail?

OEM <=> OEM?

OEM editions have always been eligible for the retail upgrade price, even
when, as in the case of XP Pro x64, only OEM editions exist in the consumer
channel. XP Pro x64 cannot even be upgraded, but it does qualify the user
to use a Vista upgrade sku.

You will.

Unless I'm wrong (I am many times), Microsoft has not yet released (or
even finalized) the pricing structure for Vista. I'm sure we will
hear about it after RC1 and RC2 (if needed) are released. Be patient.
In fact, it will probably be out as a Generic OEM before the Retail
Upgrade is released to the market. Generic OEMs are usually
$100US-$150US less than Retails are, even the Retail Upgrade. So be
patient.

As to using the Upgrade with an OEM copy of Windows: This is
sometimes possible (IF, and ONLY IF the OEM is a "Generic OEM"). And
the OEM MUST contain the "\i386" folder. If it doesn't, it probably
won't work.

Microsoft has already stated publicly that Vista will cost "about the same"
as XP.

There will not be time for an RC2. RC1 may have a couple of interim build
releases before Vista releases to manufacturing in November and is
distributed to Software Assurance customers in December. The date of
General Public Availability of Vista is set for January.

This is fine.

I found Vista beta 2 a bit difficult in the early days but the more I
learn about it the more I enthuse for it.

Should I go for a full retail of Vista based on XP Pro retail could I
put XP Pro on to the laptop or would that be a violation of the EULA?

It seems a shame not to use XP Pro on the laptop if it is at all
possible to do so

Good question. The OEM versions are machine specific obviously but the
full retail versions I think were transferable from one machine to
another if you weren't using them concurently. Don't have a EULA to hand
for a full retail. But with activation you might well find that MS says
you have already installed it on another machine and it will refuse. You
may be able to get help with the telephone activation but I wouldn't
count on it.

Just call the toll-free number. Tell them that you added
some stuff to your computer and had to reinstall Windows
and now the stupid activation thingy is being a pain the arse-
they'll give you another key. I've had to call the number three times,
over the last 5 years, I've never encountered any problem or resistance.

I've had to call them several times on behalf of clients. The only
problem I've had with it is the time it can take to get through to
someone who can help with the specific reason for needing to call them.

Having said that I was amazed at what happened on a machine last week.
The client's mobo was fried and he took this as an opportunity to
upgrade his CPU from a budget Sempron to a P4 2.8, add some memory and
upgrade the graphics card. So I put it all together and and spun it up
with his existing hard disk with XP installed and it didn't bat an
eyelid. Just wanted a few drivers. Didn't even think about re-activating.

You may not transfer an OEM license from one computer to another. You may
transfer a retail sku of Windows provided that you have completely removed
it from the previous machine. If the copy of Windows has not been
reativated on the old machine in several months activation on the new
machine will not require a call to MS.
