Defender used to have a reputation "for not catching anything." I've been
lucky; I can't speak to that, since my friends and I have been
spy/pfish/adware free lately. Mine's a "think twice before you click" crowd,
though.
Since Defender really depends a bit on the "think twice before you click"
idea when it warns of a potential issue, it's quite well suited to your type
of use. Unless Defender already has a detection in place for something new,
it assumes you'll make a reasonable decision based on what was happening at
the time, which may not be true for some people.
It's also important to realize that Defender doesn't attempt to replace
Antivirus, so there is a huge realm of malware it doesn't have in its
detections even though they are well known to other MS products like the MSRT
or OneCare. Matching Defender with a good free Antivirus should cover most
who don't participate in risky browsing behaviour quite well.
