Came across this on my last walk at the weekend. It was in a very quiet glade and was the biggest fungus I've ever seen. I pictured it next to my hat and it was certainly bigger than that (I think I have an average size head :D).

It must have been 20-25 cm in diameter and about 25 cm tall from soil level.

Anyone know its name? (and it's not Nigel)

It's Deadly Poisonous

as far as I can tell, it's a Chestnut Dapperling.

It will cause liver & kidney failure, within days. NOT to be handled.

Please people, if you are not an expert, I'm not an expert, do not be tempted to even pick any wild mushrooms ... I was ill, really ill, for 4 days once, and I barely handled the 'weird' mushroom I found.

I have only ever handled shop bought mushrooms since. :D

I've learned my lesson already. There were a few mushrooms growing in my brothers back garden and I picked them so the dogs didn't eat them. Didn't think to put gloves on and ended up with a rash all over my hands and forearms. Very itchy.

I would rephrase that: LEARN to recognise at least a couple of "easy" ones — those that are both delicious and difficult/impossible to confuse with other, poisonous species. Boletes (cep, pine bolete and summer cep) and chantarelles (chanterelle, funnel chantarelle and horn of plenty) are the most obvious choices. Just remember NOT to pick any "unknowns".

I Googled a bit and looks like there are courses available in the UK:
