I would try booting up in safe mode - F8.

errrrr....F8 is on the *frozen* keyboard

The keyboard won't be frozen after a reboot ... unless, of course, the
keyboard is **broken**, in which case there's no reasonable way to
"un-freeze" it ... just buy a new one.

windows 2000 pro,

what i meant to say was "is there a prog i can activate somehow without
the need to reboot?"

Alpha;

Your question is...unusual. If you'd like to get some help, you're
going to have to take the time to explain more fully. The short answer
to your query, however, is no.

We know that your keyboard & mouse lock up. And that this occurs under
Windows 2000. Do they freeze...

- when you launch, use and/or exit a specific app?
- whenever you use your system, regardless of apps?
- when you plug and/or unplug the keyboard/mouse?

Additionally,

Has the keyboard and mouse always froze?
Are their connectors ps2? usb?
When did it start?
What is different?
Do you have virus- & spyware apps? Which?
Are these programs' definitions up to date?
When did you last run them?

-Sparky

it doesnt lock up when using any specific application...just every now
and then just freezes...i am undergoing a virus, adware, spyware sweep
at the moment which may help but basically i am just getting tired of
having to pull the plug directly from the socket to reboot and get
going again. It may be that i have too much running but even when i
wait for the processor to catch up i have no joy. I was hoping there
would be a program that runs in the background to prevent or unlock a
total freeze up. I remember seeing a prog once which made a claim
something like this but cant remember the name of it..........

cheers if you can suggest a usefull prog....i already use
cascheman........A

ps....i am currently undergoing HIJACKTHIS analasis which i hope fixes
the problem.

I hope so too. If *ALL* else fails - if you can't find a culprit/fix -
the problem *might* be your video card. I had the same kind of problem
last summer. I tried all the scans etc. etc. first and found nothing. A
new video card was the cure.

Random freezing can be caused by bad RAM, power supply or power
quality problems, cpu over-heating, and mainboard capacitor failures.

Get MEMTest86 for testing RAM. Sometimes just removing and re-seating
the RAM modules will fix the problem. Check the cpu temp in Hardware
Health/Monitoring in the BIOS (or use SpeedFan--freeware). Swap the
power supply as a last resort (also try the system powered from
another room/outlet). Is the power supply rating adequate (350 watts)?
Any other power-hungry devices used on the same household circuit,
e.g. whenever the lights or an appliance in an adjoining room are
switched, does the system freeze? Check mainboard capacitors to see if
any are swollen/oozing a liquid. If so, replace the mainboard or get
it repaired.

CPU overheating can be caused by a failing/dust-clogged cpu/power
supply fans. In such cases, lockups occur only after the system has
been on for a while.

If the freezing is frequent and a recent phenomenon, you might try
running System Restore. Have a look at your Event log in (rt-click) My
Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > System. (Dbl-click red-X items for
descriptions.) Try a PCI video card, as a diagnostic.

Good luck!

Troubleshooting Windows STOP Errors (BSOD) and Freezes

The following issues are easily responsible for 99% of all system
instability issues, particularly with Windows:

• Bad or Flaky RAM
• High CPU/Case temperatures (Insufficient cooling)
• Bad Drivers (usually with el-cheapo hardware)
• Inadequate or Dirty Power
• Overclocking (some devices cannot run out of spec)
• Improper Permissions/Rights (results in Access Denied)
• Dirty Upgrade from Win9x/ME to 2000/XP
• Virus Infection (can result in a wide variety of problems)
• Incorrect jumper settings on your hard drive
• Improperly terminated drivers and controller
• Disabled or Misconfigured Services

SYMPTOMS OF COMMON ISSUES

• Bad Drivers ............ BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) or Spontaneous
Reboot
• Overheating ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Bad/Flaky RAM .......... Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze or
Failed Install
• Dirty Power ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Generated
Errors
• Inadequate Power ....... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Overclocking ........... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Improper Permissions ... BSOD or System Generated Errors
• Dirty upgrade .......... BSOD or System Errors or Slowness or
Erratic Behavior
• Virus Infection ........ Inexplicable slowness or Highly Erratic
Behavior
• Wrong Drive Settings ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or
Long Boot times
• Bad SCSI Termination ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or
Long Boot times
• Disabled Services ...... Poor System Performance or Installation
Problems or Limited OS Functionality

thanks for the tip....i just hope your not right.......

i assume that my windows update downloads any anti crash alterations if
they exist....problem is.....this sodding bug has stoped my update from
working too......
HIJACKTHIS seems like a good little prog so i am still hopefull. From
now on i will install spyblaster when bug is sorted out.

cheers.......A

again you may have a point....my cables look like one of those balls of
sticks you see bouncing through the desert in cowboy movies....must get
it sorted....i have just bought a surge guard and a load of cable
ties.....

thanks for the tips.....i already use casheman but am hoping HIJACKTHIS
will fix the problem before i look at other possibillities.

cheers......A

thanks for that usefull list.....if the problem is not in that list i

I forgot to mention that loose expansion cards and connectors can also
cause freezing. Be sure power is disconnected before reseating IDE
cables on the mainboard, so as not to short the board against the
chassis.

Is the mouse optical? Some of these are extremely power hungry, and
would stop in mid motion.

Do they run wireless? How good are their batteries?

on my Win98SE I have Norton CrashGuard, I received once with a
Magazin CD included in a trial version. (The guard itself is free.)
I have a program which tends to crash when the files become large.
Often I end up then with a window with antifreeze button. Then I can
at least save my work and restart.
I don't know where to get it. Program names in my folder are
cgmain.exe and cg32eh.exe. Perhaps this helps.

Google says: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Norton+Crash+Guard+locate+it
NOT FREEWARE ..
I used that program years ago and had more computer crashes with it than without
it! A
co-worker had the same experience with this program. I still have a CD version of
it, but
I removed it from my computer years ago and didn't miss a thing. ... except many
crashes.
