This has probably been asked a million times before but I need a comparison
program with which to find duplicates, mostly .mp3's and .jpg/.jpeg files. I
have somehow gotten into a mess and need some help finding all the 'extra
copies'. Thanks.

Clone Spy

Version 2.0 (28.12.2003)

Complete re-implementation of CloneSpy in order to integrate a wide
variety of new features:

* Exclude files or file patterns from a scan
* Case sensitive file name comparisons
* Advanced log file options
* Presentation of all duplicates at the end of a scan
* Presentation of duplicates together in one large list
* Lockable pools for faster scans if the content of a pool is used more
than once
* Search for same-name files with same size or approximately same size
* File deletion decision based on length of file names
* Export duplicates as list to a text file
* Defer handling of duplicate files to a batch file in order to apply
arbitrary file operations

You have been given a lot of good and free options for checking exact binary
duplicates. Now if you are like me there is also a problem with files that are
NOT binary identical but still represent the same image. Different crop, screwed
around with colors/contract/etc. For this I have tried zillions of apps but the
only one to do a good job is thumbsplus from cerious, which unfortunately is
shareware. It is so good it's uncanny, however. If anyone knows a free app that
does the same *and works*, I'd be very interested to hear.

I don't know any freaking equivalent with MP3s, either.

it's the app susan suggested in her first link.
worths a try.

Dup Detector (I have ver. 2.14) works great for images. You can
adjust the closeness of the match (I find that about 97% is good for
my purposes).

I finally had a vacation and found the time to test seriously Dup Detector.
It is indeed not bad at all in finding out similar pictures.

The user interface is not nearly as practical (ha!) as Thumbsplus, but it is
indeed a workable freeware solution.

Thanks to Paul, javalab and Tw for pointing out DD.
