Blender is a full featured 3D animation package. It has mucho tools and
they are really taking off now that the software is open source. Latest
version has any object as a light source with radiosity. Newer features
are still under construction but it's only been open source for a year.
Nearing critical mass. Considering the learning curve for any 3d app,
you'll be glad you got started now.
By the way, you could also use the program as a video compositing
sequencer including support for sound tracks. Kind of slow, but as far
as video freeware goes, there aren't many out there.

For modeling try Wings3D and hamaPatch

but Blender is soon to have a lot of the features of Wings and already
has several high end modeling tools. To see what the community is up to
go to Elysian

Looks like it still puts a watermark on your creations:Actually, as of today (I think) Maya has a free edition with almost
all of the abilities of the commerical edition. They have it on their
website at:

It is dubbed the Maya Personal Learning Edition. Slashdot also has an
article on it.
