Moreover, the way Benign is adertised on their website, they claim it is
better than any virus scanner out there. Could someone let me know his.her
opinion on that, please?

Hey, I've been using Cloudmark's Spamnet as a plugin for Outlook to
stop all this spam I've been getting but, unfortunately, the trial
period is going to run out and I just don't have the money to get a
subscription (one would think that with such a lack of funds, spammers
wouldn't be interested in targetting me). Does anyone have any
suggestions? What programs (freeware or like-it would be ideal) are
there for me to look at? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Try MailWasher:

mailwasher is good. It takes some time to make the rules for what's spam and
what's not, but after a while i feel that i have less spam. I used spamnet
when it was beta And that app was very good. But well.......

I use MailWasher all the time and highly recommend it. I have also
used/paid for Benign and stopped using it when it stopped checking my
incoming messages, for some reason.

No, Benign is NOT a replacement for a virus detection program. What
their advertising says is that it supplements your anti-virus software
and stops some things that your anti-virus software does not, which,
when it is working properly, is true.

You still need good anti-virus software.

Just a side note on MailWasher - don't enable the bouncing feature since
a large % of junk mail is sent using forged/spoofed From & Return
addresses. You'd often be bouncing messages to innocent victims of
forgery/spooofing.
