Like when removing commercials from a recorded TV program.

Any way to remove portions from inside a clip without breaking up the clip
and trimming the ends?

Just split the video at the beginning and end of the commercial, then delete that clip.

P.S. From Movie Maker Help:
To split a video or audio clip
1.. In the Contents pane or on the storyboard/timeline, click the clip you want to split.
2.. On the Play menu, click Play Clip, and then click Pause Clip on the Play menu to pause the video at the point you want to split the clip.
-or-

On the monitor, move the playback indicator on the seek bar to the point you want to split the clip.

3.. On the Clip menu, click Split.

Bob,

In general you are not permitted to send HTML files to newsgroups. There is
one attached to your message containing 2,335 bytes which could be a
virus...I have no idea as I deleted it from my system. Please be more
carefull when posting messages to a text only newsgroups. If you do not
know how to sort this out your ISP will be able to help

Still involves splitting clips and trimming the ends of split clips.

Is there any way to select the portion I want to remove and chose "cut" and
just excise that portion, leaving the rest in a single clip?

Not in Movie Maker. You can cut a clip and throw away the part(s) you don't
want. But you can't combine clips that have segments discarded, not without
putting them on the timeline and rendering a new movie file.

That seems to be the case for most sub $100 editors/DVD authoring software
:-(

How about Premiere. Can you cut a portion of a video out in that software?

TMPGEnc has a 'Merge and Cut' feature, which might work for you. Here's an
extract from it's help file:

"Merge & Cut" can divide one MPEG file in multiple files or merge separate
files into one contiguous MPEG file. For example, one would use the merge
feature if one wanted to add sequence to the start of a movie, or use the
cut feature if one wanted to cut out the ending credits.

You can use it free for 30 days (forever if you don't need the MPEG2
codec) - there's a link on my CD Burning... General page.

Thanks for the input. I have heard only good things about TMPGEnc and I
intend to buy and use it to render the MPEG-2 files.

However, most low budget DVD authoring software (like Roxio's DVDBuilder)
re-render the video before burning the DVD, even though the file imported
into the authoring program is fully DVD compatible.

Do you know if this is the case with other DVD authoring software (like
MyDVD which is mentioned often here).
Afterall, what's the point of sending so much effort to create good MPEG-2
files if the authoring software ends up re-rendering ..?
