Can anyone recommend a conversion utlity-for working out how, for example,
2.5mb in bytes?

try a calculator perhaps

1024byte = 1Kbyte
1024Kbyte = 1MByte
1024Mbyte = 1GByte

A superb small program. IMO anyone who doesn't have Convert should
download it now. :)

programs/accessories/calculator

type
1024*1024*2.5=

or add 5% mentally , because 4.8576% uses more brain juice
and 2.5 probably isn't accurate anyway.

2.5+.125=2.625 million

or
since hd slack space is variable and internet transmissions can pad
10% easily , add 10%

2.5+.25=2.75

your calculation will be out by one hundredth of a cent of storage
in most scenarios this is not worth the time to think about it.

Gigs need 7.374% correction, so 10% is still a good quick rule of thumb.
