Buy SONY only, true of almost all electronics. Cost a wee more but look in
Yahoo! shops. I got a closeout16/10/40x not long ago for like $55

Any advice on buying cd-rw?

Are all CDs rewritable btw?

I bought a generic (I/O Magic) burner at OfficeMax last month (52x24x52) for
$15.00 after a $30.00 rebate. It's got a one-year warranty, and has worked
great so far. I'll wait to spend more money on a burner when DVD burners come
down a little in price. Otherwise, the Lite-On models get good reviews, and
most of them come with Nero.

As far as CDR media, I buy the made in Japan FUJI brand as they are made by
Taiyo Yuden, and cost $15.00 for a 50 count package. I don't use CD-RW media so
I cannot comment on them.

I second that. T-Y media has been good in any burner I've used.

Sony products are overpriced and their warranty support is nonexistant.

Lite-On here for cd-r/rw and dvd+r/rw.

Good dollar to what you get ratio. I've been using Liteon optical drives and
Western Digital hard drives for years now. Seagate, Maxtor and IBM suck the
ripe banana....

Considering that other brands of CD writers are often just $20, after
rebate, this is nothing special. And while I haven't heard anything
bad about Sony CD writers, their other products are not noted for
exceptional reliability or even superior performance any more, just
higher prices. A Google Groups search of sci.electronics.repair can
show you what I mean. Sony is known for complex designs, including
one stereo power amplifier known to destroy several of its large
transistors, caused by the very circuit meant to prevent this, sort of
like a spare tire causing a blow out.

For consumer electronics, the most reliable products tend to be by
Panasonic (Quasar, Technics) and Sanyo, although even they've made
lemons, like Panasonic's microwave ovens that rapidly turn the
microwaves on and off.

Lite-On

No. There are CDs that can be written ONE time called CD-R. There
are CDs that can be rewritten (about 100 times) called CD-RW. Both
have various speed limits.

No. There are CDs that can be written ONE time called CD-R.

your forgetting multi-session disks

Multi-session is a method of writing to a CD-R. This is often used to
ADD (not change) new data to a CD, perhaps for backing up data. Any
given area on the CD-R can only be written (burned) once.

My mistake for saying CD-RWs can be re-written 100 times. It's
actually 1000 times.

DVDs are a lot more confusing with more non-standard "standards."

Then you paid too much. A 52/24/52 (or thereabouts) can be had for around
the same price, probably cheaper if you're willing to look around a little
bit. In fact, I have an LG 32/10/40 CD-R/RW/DVD combo drive that I picked up
for $40.

Buy a DVD burner. Don't waste your money on a Cd-burner.
DVD burners are coming way down in price and do an excellent job
burning CD-R's and CD-RW's, much faster too.
Just be sure to get a DVD burner that handles both the plus and minus
formats.
I recommend Liteon, I have a Liteon DVD burner that has burned
perfectly from day one.
