Does anybody out there know if there's a free antivirus app that works with
Vista? My Norton subscription ran out and don't think Norton is worth what
Symantec charges. I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp,
can't seem to find the same for Vista. Any help is greatl appreciated.

Avast works well with Vista and they have a free version.

For "paid-for" antivirus programs, my favorite is NOD32 and it is $39.99 for
a one-year subscription for home users. No, I don't work for them or make
any money by suggesting them; I just very much like their products. But
Avast will do fine if you want free.

AVG Anti Virus (http://free.grisoft.com) is the one I prefer. You could also
use Avast! (www.avast.com) but the interface isn't as user friendly as that
of AVG.

Of the three free Vista compatible solutions I have tried, AVG, Avast, and
AntiVir, AVG appears to be the least intrusive and easiest to work with..

I'll be stronger than that. I don't think Norton is worth anything. It's the
worst product on the market.

I recommend the free Avast!

I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp,

I agree, Ken. Norton was great when Windows 95/98 was around but since then
it has gone in decline. I certainly wouldn't use it or recommend Norton.

May I toss in a vote for BitDefender Antivirus 2008. It works well on Vista
and has received high marks on some reviews that I've read. It isn't free
but is inexpensive: $24.95 for one user for a year or $29.95 for three
users for a year.

Back in those days, McAfee had less of a performance impact than Norton did.
The last four years have seen McAfee catching up and equaling Norton. Now,
both suites can bring a system to its knees..

"....can bring a system to its knees" has not been my experience at all with
Norton products in general (over the last five years) and Norton 360 with
Vista in particular (currently). Perhaps I have just been lucky, but I can
only judge things as they come...

You should try running something else for a while. You would notice a
difference..

Actually, Mike, up until about 1 month ago I was running a number of
different apps that, in total provided the same features as Norton 360
(antivirus, antispam, antiphishing, firewall etc and as well as free online
storage). Being from different companies, they did not work well with each
other, frequently created hangs because of conflicts and really slowed
things things down. Based on my experience, I would recommend 360 for those
requiring an integrated package of functions (for Vista at least, on a
system with 2G of memory).

Above is the link for Norton Removal Tool; if using Norton.

Vista’s Firewall is very good!

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Above is a link to Avast Free 4 Home Anti-Virus
It is low resource using, free and Vista 32bit and 64bit compatible.
Only have one (1) anti-virus installed; more than 1 can cause conflicts.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

For Spyware removal, use the above link to “Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2â€
Download it, install it, update it, immunize your system and scan your
System with it.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

For a non-scanning, but running in the background, Program to STOP Spyware
being downloaded to your Computer, use SpywareBlaster 4, available at the
above link.

IMPORTANT ADVICE: After scanning with the above Programs, problems still
remain.

Reboot computer, and tap F8 at power on/ startup. From the list of options
that appears, select Safe mode by using the UP and DOWN Arrows, then hit
ENTER.

Rescan the computer in Safe mode.

@ Petey: sorry, I accidentally ended up emailing my response to you.

Here's my response again: if free it is, avast! it must be.
Interestingly, Avira AntiVir 8.0 is just out and touted to be a
complete overhaul. I'm not that convinced, because it still suffers
from issues from previous versions. If you can afford paid antivirus
software, go for NOD32 or Kaspersky or BitDefender, in that order.

Read my reviews (yes, I've used all of them): http://avscan.blogspot.com
After all, it's your choice!
