My Norton shot craps (says it has a bad liveupdate and reload it but the
only hook is it won't reload), SO I'm looking for a freebee and dropping
Norton after paying them for many years. It was 2002 and I even downloaded
2004 and IT won't load the liveupdate.

Looking for one with auto updates and equal to Norton when it works (which
now it don't).

Suggestions?

There are so many many suggestions on this newsgroup so I recommend reading
this newsgroup a bit more.
I'm happy with AVG but it is not as up to date with new infections as some
other anti virus applications.
I use multiple anti virus stand alone/online applications but only have AVG
active scan active.

Bummer! I was thinking I was in alt.comp.anti-virus that I was just
reading.
So peruse that newsgroup to read of anti virus application alternatives.
 
I have read the notes on AVG and I got the impression most had a problem
with it. I'm trying to get away from problems not exchange them.

Did you check to see if it would update the virus definitions via
Intelligent Updater:

Hello Glen:

1) If you having problems, contact Norton. I would not spend money and
then go look for a freeware alternative.

2) You can download the Norton virus definitions from this links.

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html

This takes longer then just updating to the newest Virus definitions but
it will get you by until you have resolved your problems with Norton Ant-
Virus.

No, I wasn't aware of it. In a dilemma now though. 2002 pro refuses to
re-load. 2004 is on it now even though it isn't updated and I have applied
for a refund on the 2004 so morally I can't use it. ("Morally" a strange
word used around software.) [g]

Updates are larger than most (~1mb-1.5mb) so broadband is recommended.

I agree with Dud!! I had your problem with Norton Antivirus 2002 and was
extremely disappointed with the Symantec response. All the info they gave me
did not help the problem and only served to aggravate me further. As it
stands, I believe that they still owe me about six months on the
subscription, which I couldn't care less if I ever get back!!
During my "attempts" to get Symantec's attention to my problem, I paid
close attention to a "thread" on this newsgroup about ALL the AV's out
there. I decided on Anti-Vir PE (Personal Edition) and I have not been
disappointed since. I may upgrade to the "pay version" because it is that
good!! I have had it for about six months and there has been a new version
almost every day, especially since this "Sven Worm" or whatever has been
going on. It even picked up about three (3) things on my system that Norton
had not "cleaned up" when I first installed it!!
I think you will be very impressed with it!!

Boy, that sounds great Guys. Sounds like kindred spirits there. Kind of a
major jump so I'll wait and see if any others have suggestions but yours
sound the best by far so far. Thanks. (Price is good too)

Whoa, my mistake. I should have mentioned I'm using XP pro and the poop
sheet says its for 98SE. Problem? I know Norton 2001 will not work on xp.
Same thing?

I also have Windows XP Home Edition with the SP-1 and all subsequent
updates., and Office XP Professional Edition. I use Zone Alarm as my
firewall, AntiVir as my virus checker and AdAware for the pop-ups, etc.
baloney. I make the habit that I run AntiVir and AdAware on start-up and
when I go online I immediately have AntiVir go for an Internet Update, then
I have AdAware look for its' update, and I also check on Zone Alarm!! Only
then do I check my email and/or go on the Internet!! I consider my computer
system as tools, just like the "tools" I use in my profession (Construction
Electrician), and I take care of them because they may save my life, and if
they are not in "top condition", they won't be available to use when I need
them the most.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth!!

My experience with AVG has been all positive. From my reading in the
AV newsgroups, most people find AVG effective, if not capable of the
100% ratings Norton gets. The difference is pretty small. And I
haven't heard of too many problems with AVG. Most problems come from
a corrupted download of the main program.

I'm using AntiVir, it's not bad. It pops up a reminder every 14 days
or so to start auto update. It's very well-behaved. I don't give it
much to do because I'm set up to avoid most viruses, but it feels good
to have it. I also use eSafe Desktop, but that's apparently gone to
shareware for the most recent issue. You can still download the
previous (free) version and current updates though. Each one works in
a different way, eSafe uses a virtual "sandbox" to keep things
contained, while AntiVir is more like an old-fashioned virus checker
and TSR.

The virus protection is very good. The current daily update system is not
good. To many daily updates require complete uninstall of the program and
download/install the latest program release from their website. Use their
German or English Forums to better understand the freeware program update
problem.

KAV has offered me a 50% discount. Right now I'm using a freebee called
AntiVir Guard that I think may work out. If not, I'll take them up on their

Norton!!! @#$%^&* It refused to remove via XP's built in program. It said
the liveupdate was running. Maybe it was but it didn't work. Anyway, I
traced down the exe program that was running (lucomserver.exe) and tried
delete it. Access denied. Went to DOS. Access denied. To shorten a long
story and after many verbal descriptions of the heritage of the writers, I
rebooted into DOS safe mode. I haven't used DOS for so long that it took a
while to figure out how to erase it but I did erase it. Went back to
windows and through normal removal, dumped it. I'll do a registry search
later.

I only update every 15 days or so. The auto update check reminds me. I
don't know why I'd want to update daily, that's too much work...unless
a really bad virus is making the rounds, I generally let my other
lines of defense take care of things first, AntiVir is just added
insurance.

On the contrary, AVG is perhaps the most trouble free anti-virus product
I have ever used and I have installed it on more than 40 friends,
coworkers and customer computers.

In the end its your opinion that counts though but don't dismiss it
without at least trying it first. You'll be hard pressed to find anything
better.
