When someone brings in their personal machine for repair, I'd like to
connect it to our network for internet access. It will need Windows
updates, for example.

I can do a remote scan on that machine right away, but am I too late?
Our Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition does real-time file scanning,
but I'm still paranoid.

I can install the AV software on the machine, but then it needs
internet access to get the latest definitions.

Any recommendations?
Thanks.

You could install the AV software, then install the updated AV data files
from a burned CD before bringing it on your network ...

I would put it on an isolated network to scan it first - all you need is a hub and a
couple of cables. Of course all your computers need to be current with virus
protection and critical updates also. Ideally your isolated network should have it's
own internet access such as a separate IP from your ISP and it's own router. ---

Thanks Ron and Steven.
I may have to resort to one of those techniques.
I was just wondering. If I refrained from running any apps, or moving
any files on the machine in question, *might* I be safe.

Probably not. :)

Thanks again.

Well the problem is that worms or viruses put themselves in the startup list in
the registry and can immediately start scanning the network trying to attack
other machines. Booting into safe mode with networking could reduce that risk
quite a bit if you need to go that route. --- Steve

Doesn't seem worth the risk, does it.
Think I'll stick your suggestions.
Thanks.
