What is the best anti-virus program. I’m currently using the AVG fre
edition. Right now when I start my computer. The desktop shows up the
goes away and comes back after it has booted up. Is this a virus? Ho
do U find out if and what virus U have. I would like to know more abou
computers in general. Where’s the best place to start

AVG is OK as are a host of others (does not include McAfee and Norton). The
purpose of an AV program that is kept up to date is to identify any
virus/trojan that has infected the machine--that's how you find out what
your PC has, if anything. If you do not have a malware program (different
from an AV program) then I suggest you get one or two and use them
regularly:

AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

These programs must be checked for updates before each use.

To learn about computers, start reading topics in the newsgroups that
interest you. Or, visit a local book store/library and pick up some reading
material.

I ran AGV and I have a Trojan horse down loader agent. What can I do t
destroy this for good. It keeps coming back somehow. I have Spy bot an
update it and use it.

That probably means there is a file being started at boot that restores the
Trojan once it is removed. Start by going to the Start Menu, Run and
typing: msconfig and clicking OK. On the resulting screen, click on
the startup tab. Review every item being started at boot and if you don't
know what it is, Google it. Read at least a couple of descriptions before
disabling anything (removing the check mark). If you find a file like:
wuacutkl.exe, you will probably find there is little or no info on it. That
was a file that I found this week on a PC that put a downloader Trojan on
the system. Once I killed the process that started it, I deleted the file
and the Trojan was gone for good.

After I read the description and disable them I can enable them
(put the check mark back) Right? That's the way it sounds
anyways.

Yes. Disabling merely means keeping it from starting at boot. On some of
the real persistent ones, you may have to resort to using HiJackThis;
however, that program should only be used if you are absolutely sure of what
you are doing. Should you need help with it, there are various sites on the
web where you can post a HiJackThis log and receive free help from experts
on the program/security.

Hi Ron, I finally got around the disabling and enabling the things in
the starting at boot. Here's what I found: Adobe acrobat reader.
causes- White line across horizontal bottom of the screen. Pops up an
agv window for a sec. sometime at startup.
My HP digital imaging? Makes my desktop appear and then disappear, my
copier, scanner, fax.
To me, it appears I could to add/remove programs and remove My HP
digital imaging? Than reinstall it. Is this away to handle this?
Thanks, Jamie
