System is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (all updates
processed as at 28 Feb 2005). Antispyware upgrade to
version 1.0.9 fails message windows reports that windows
installer service could not be accessed. Please note that
user has administrator privileges and the system is not
running in safe mode.

Un-install process for Antispyware Version 1.0.501 also
fails.

What is the recommended solution

Thanks for the infomation I have logged on as the
Administrator however there has been no change to the
outcomes when either trying to uninstalling 1.0.501 or
upgrading to 9.

Cheers

What happens if you go to a command prompt and do net start "windows
installer <enter>
?

The response is: "The service cannot be started, either
because is is disabled or it has no enabled devices
associated with it".

Hmm - When is a service not a service? (The answer appears to be when it is
the Windows Installer Service which walks like a duck and quacks like a duck
but doesn't respond to SC!)

Please ignore my asides.

If you do Start, Run, services.msc <enter>

And scroll down to Windows Installer, what is the startup type set to?

If it is set to disabled, please change that to Manual, and hit apply.

Success and thank you for working through this problem
with me.

This is what I did to resolve my problem.

First I check Windows Installer which was set to Manual,
so I selected and applied the disable option then I
selected and applied the Manual option. I then ran the
executable to upgrade Version 1.0.501 to Version 1.0.509
which was completed successfully.

Un-install now works.

All my issues with this application appear to have been
resolved.

What can you say perhaps it was a case of gremlin
mischief again?

Very interesting--glad it worked--and perhaps some similar issue is behind
some of the reports of uninstallation not working--I really hadn't thought
about these from that angle--most people just say "how can I uninstall this"
when it seems obvious--you just make the uninstall choice, and.....

I was reasonably sure it wasn't going to come up set to disable--that would
have been too simple, and you'd have complained long ago--excellent
troubleshooting!
