Use the software in anger last night to try and rid my
machine of Lop.com (or variant of) the result seemed to
indicate the software had irradiated this menace, only for
it to re-appear at next boot up and use of IE. Where the
additional steps that should have been taken?

Disable System restore. and run it reboot and run it in safe mode. Then
reboot again and Try IE see if it works then. You could always get
firefox then you most likley wouldnt have gotten spywhere in the first
place. Just use IE for windows updates and sites that require use of IE
to be displayed right. I mean come on the browser is 4 years old. (Thats
old for computer software)

I agree with AMDGUY about the cure--do a full scan with Microsoft
Antispyware in safe mode--if it cleans on the first scan, do a second to see
if that comes through clean.

I think, in the long run, the safety factor in browsers will be the company
which manages patches to problems found the best. I still use Internet
Explorer, or Maxthon, but my internal "jury" is still out on how this will
play out over time.

Okay, I will give it a spin tonight, I had considered
Firefox ( I have heard rave reviews about this software).
I will post result later.

I belive the safty factor mainly depends on wich browser is more widely
used. Think If you where a michevious person trying to a dos attack you
would want your program to "infect" the wider user base to make your
attack more successful. Same goes for the spyware you they want to get
the most information possiable so they are going to go after the borwser
that more people use. There are more dumb "computer iliterate" people
out there that dont know there is a chioce of browsers for windows so
they are going to use what is all ready there "IE". For this reason IE
will mostly have a dominate share of the market. So the browser that is
more widely used "IE" will be the one with more evident "holes" and the
one most attcked.

Amdguy and Bill Sanderson, after hours of running anti-
spyware software, wading through forums and pages of
Highjackthis log sheets, enough. I followed the steps
suggested,. rebooted and there it sat just like before. I
have downloaded Firefox and apart for not being able to
use Messenger 6.2 on one machine using (XP home) all
appears to be well. ONLY TIME WILL TELL!

Hi, Andy!
Anyway, as preventive measure you can use Spybot S&D
in conjunction with JavaCools SpywareBlaster to
_immunize_ your system. SS&D maybe is not the best
tool to get rid existing malware out of infected
machine, but as preventer it works good enough.
Also, you may take a look at:
http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php
fur further hardening against ActiveX nasties;
(I don't know if latter makes great sense in case of
Firefox, but it don't hurts anything)

Congratulations! The goal is to be able to avoid all that hassle, although
at the rate this stuff changes, that hassle may still be necessary for some
folks.
