What do you consider to be the best free antispam software? I have used
Spamihilator with some success but it seems that after I have used it for
awhile it tends to slow down and lock up while downloading mail on
occassion. I have also used mailwasher with similar results. Today I
downloaded and installed K9 and I am checking it out. Any other
suggestions?

thanks,

Magic Mail Monitor

I have used Spamihilator for almost a year and yes it does slow down. BUT
if you empty the recycle bin often it speeds right back up. I try and
remember to empty the recycle bin at least once a week and I have no
problems if I do.

Never had any problems with spamihilator, although some
plugins may slow it down (but they're optional, not part of the
pgm package), at any rate, spami, K9 and POPfile work ok
I'm using spami just because I like its approach, GUI and
the ability to customize it with plugins; give it another spin
but this time use only the following plugins (if any)

Newsletters
X-Header
Empty Mail
Scripts
Attachments
DNSBL
Learning
Image
SpamWords

in the above order, also be sure to *uncheck* the
"Disable and enable blacklists automatically" in
the DNSBL filter; and since I'm at it, set the DNSBL
list to use the following

sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
list.dsbl.org
relays.ordb.org
dnsbl.njabl.org
korea.services.net
dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net
l1.spews.dnsbl.sorbs.net

and also set the filter aggressiveness
to "high", this will help a little in speeding
up the bayesian training

My friend told me about Death2Spam which he uses at work. I don't
know if it is free but it successfully filters incoming spam.

You have convinced me to give Spamihilator another go around. I was unable
to download the plugins ... X-Header and DNSBL though ... the websites for
these downloads no longer are active. Thank you everyone for your input.
