"netsh winsock reset " will do NOTHING for AV software ! It was just a coincidence in a
previous attempt.

You don't even state what the AV software is. You need to supply facts !

sorry about the lack of info, I have norton anti virus 2004. What happens is
a balloon pops ups everytime I boot up saying 'your computer may be at risk
as your antivirus is turned off, click balloon to fix'
I run regular virus checks and never open mail from unknown sources

This "most likely" is nothing to worry about. I've seen it on one of my
laptops, where it just indicates that the XP security center has loaded before
my a/v loads. If you watch the notification area as you boot, you should see
the icon for your a/v appear very shortly after the "unprotected" warning pops
up.

There may be a way to rearrange the order in which programs start, but it hasn't
bothered me enough to look for it.

thanks for that. it is also a laptop, what I find strange is that this has
not always been the case, it is a very recent thing

Next time you get a message indicate "you may be at risk"
goto; http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

Download an EICAR test file. It is NOT a virus but a standardized anti virus test file.

Thankyou David, well I went to the site downloaded the test file and it seems that my AV software is working fine as it detected all of the tests. anymore tips would be very welcome

Well that proves the AV is OK. But it means that the Security Settings are incorrect and is
ignoring your AV software. I'm sorry I don't have good information to rectify that :-(

Thanks for your help so far, it is very strange because this morning when I
turned on everything was fine! so now I am confused can these problems be
intermitent?

Graeme
