Can any suggest free virus scanning and removal software, or rather one with a
free trial that I can try out. I know nothing about this stuff and have no clue
what's good, legit etc..

Thanks much!

Happy Holidays

most av products have a free trial... my suggestion/recommendation
would be for f-prot...

of course i would also recommend learning more about protecting
yourself through safe-hex and the like, since anti-virus products
aren't and never will be perfect and thus shouldn't be relied apon as
your only layer of protection...

Lol, thanks, Kurt and everyone else.

The only thing is, I tried out a free download trial of a product that found
12 pieces of "dangerous" spyware and
virus related files, but in order to remove
them you had to buy their product.
So the next day I just went to Best
Buy and got Norton AV 2004. It found
stuff, but not exactly the same things
the online program found, and everything
is cleared up now.

then you tried the wrong free trial... maybe even the wrong av
company... most should have free trials that include cleaning (assuming
the av product has cleaning ability in the first place - some don't)
but most != all...

I tried several free trials and found out that their major
disadvantage is not the limited trial period of, say, 30 days but the
fact that only one update of the virus definitions was possible...

....

An interesting marketing idea, indeed - but it was not the case with
NAV, was it?

.... well, even that much *should* be sufficient to help you deal with
an immediate virus situation... however, i agree, it would be nice to
be able to keep it up to date for the duration of the free trial... i'm
a little surprised to here you say many don't, but oh well - i never
said the industry didn't have room to improve...

so who wants to employ rhetoric as a pressure tactic here?
